A fantastic version of "King Lear", masterfully adapted by Akira Kurosawa. Great scenery, great acting, great costumes and a great script renders this masterpiece 5/5 well earned stars! A true "Must see"!

A nearly catatonic warlord- head of a powerful clan, is driven to the brink of insanity by the horror of civil war. Indeed, the name Ran translates into English as "chaos". A statement about honour, ambition, greed and agony with a scene-stealing revenge-minded Lady Kaede. RAN is a visual triumph. Every image on the screen breathes with colour, and it comes as no surprise that the movie, with its stunning battle sequences, won the 1986 Oscar for Best Costume Design. HAUNTING!

Absolutly brilliant! One of the greatest movies ever 10-10.Akira kurosawa behind the camera directing showing why many say he was the finest movie director ever but imo its Tatsuya,Nakadai who plays lord hideotoro who stands out giving a great performance perhaps the finest of his long career over 40yrs and included classics such as Sanjuro,Yojimbo, samurai rebelion, the human condition movies,Harikiri,Sword of doom and kwaidan plus many, many more ....

I finally got round to watching this! After first reading 'Lear' nearly 30 years ago (ouch!). Short review posted.

I was bored off my ass for 2 1/2 hours and i'll tell you why. 1- Theres no period of getting to know the characters, I really didn't feel attached to any of the characters and wasn't sad to see any of them go. 2-The story arc moves a little slowly for my tastes- you see repetitive scenes that, in my opinion, serve the same purpose. They milked the drama. 3- Zero action. This is normally ok but when you you relinquish subtlety it makes a recipe for disaster I think. 4- Like some other shakespear stories, the ending seems pointless to everyone involved. The climax is in the "moral of the story" and only to be had in retrospect by the onlookers. I'll give it 3/5 just because its 25 years old and didn't flat out suck. Theres some nostalgia to see films made this way, but thats about all i got from it. Each to their own, I'll stick with Red Cliff.
