One of my favorite movies of all time... and I'm 22, so even if you're young you can still enjoy this masterpiece

A complete bore in comparison to the books. Kubrick's films are always great but I think this story was poorly represented by this film.

The book is much better, plus all of its sequels. Doesn't leave you hanging and bored like Kubrick did.

A story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon's surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the "monolith placers" that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be

all lot of people saying its a masterpiece and a lot of people saying its slow and boring. i understand and respect both sides of the viewers opinions but surely im not the only one that has not got a fking clue what was going on right towards the end? you know in the classy looking room when hes older and then the massive baby thing floating in space?? WTF IS ALL THAT ABOUT?? anyone explain? up till then i understood what was going on but then the end.....????? its like someone else took a load of acid and directed the last 10 mins imo WTF

1960? it looks way better than a 1999 movie. I bet that costed 1 billion dollars to make this movie back then

Simply stunning, Kubrick was generations ahead of his time with this film and nothing comes even close. He just had style! 10/10

this masterpiece shouldnt be called a movie, its a work of art, with deep meaning within, kubrick as usual was amazing.

This was so amazing!! Stanley Kubrick is the most amazing director! This movie was so good. I love the music, the plot is so original. There are slow parts, but that is how the movie is. It is amazing. This is a MUST SEE!!

Space Odyssey is to space exploration as Dr. Strangelove was to the atomic bomb. Exceptional movie that doesn't attemt to compress a lot of redicalous and overdone dialogue with cheesy 60s visible wire effects. They actualy thought about how it would be like to be in space, then potreyed that with contemporary designs and color schemes and made it work. This was a great movie!

What the hell was that? HAL was cool, but the first 45 minutes are a guy traveling to a monolith then you never see them again (waste of time) then it's about a crew going to jupiter then their is 10 minutes of flashing lights then a old guy eating then a baby floating WTF was that crap. 1/5

5/5 obviously many people around here are unable to comprehend the movie. let mee tell you this, this is not a plot driven story rather it is a combination of surrealism and our fascination of space and destiny of mankind. as the title says this film is indeed a space odyssey with a beautiful inclusion of the blue danube waltz that made it synonomys with space travel. really people try to read the interpretations of this movie before you go about trolling it.

This movie is visual poetry ! This is the real Sci-Fi made by the genius Kubrick adapted from another genius work (Arthur C. Clarke). Dont miss this one, is marvellous !!! 11/10

very hard to believe this was made in the 60s visually beautiful! fantastic sound and music with an epic story. it was truely ahead of its time!

havent seen it

The first time I watched this I was about 10 years old. I was bored to tears. I watched it again when I was a teenager, and I loved it, because I started to understand it. Complex, enthralling and thoroughly entertaining. A true 'journey' of a movie.

$125.6 million to make, but in todays money thats about $400 million. Just to let you know.

Maybee you should read the book.. presuming you read books of course. That would help you with the plot.. including what that food was the old Dave was eating. The other reason this is considered a masterpiece is the sfx.. remember, Barbarella came out the same year as this, 2001 was a massive technical jump, the start of modern sfx.

A fantastic ride from Kubrick, telling us about the story of mankind from primitive ape men to the man of the future. Classic and great with superb special effects that where way ahead of its time. !0/10

This movie is waaay to long and starts off slow in my opinion. The music is great and the effects are fantastic considering this was made in the 60's!!! But I didn't enjoy the story that much, it seems like a film you need to watch more than once to understand it however its too long for me so I'm not in any rush to re-watch it. Effects & Music wise I'll give it a 10/10 but story wise 5/10

masterpiece.. ive seen so many scenes in other movies that, clearly, were borrowed from this film. usually, i dont enjoy 'old' films, but this was great. it's hard to believe, even, that this was released back in 1968. i wonder what the people thought about it back then, so many years ago..

I didn't like it when i was younger .But now i like it even 2010 is good now .its amazing this thing was made in the 60's

what the hell was this junk. NO Plot the last 20 minutes make no sence what was with the old man eating? 15 damn minutes of lights flashing then a fetus floating. this movie is one of the worst filmds ever made.

Like a Circle around the human condition, 2001 starts at the beginning, skips the middle, and proceeds to the ending, right back where we started. Noting the weakness of words compared to image(s), Kubrick wisely dispenses with dialogue, preferring the power and essence of the scenery, and allowing the intelligence of the audience to do the deciphering. Or not, depending on the audience. A monolith in cinematic history, 2001 is a high water mark of direction, execution, and achievement. If one considers the ambition of the film (a film about everything), and the measure of success the film achieved to that end, a very sound argument for this being the greatest of all films can be made.
