In a remote woodland shack, young couple Ash and Linda (Campbell and Bixler) discover a tape recording left by a mysterious scientist claiming there is an evil, supernatural presence in the surrounding woods.

In the first Evil Dead movie, Raimi created a tense zombie classic as a tribute to hero George A. Romero. Although this superior sequel is essentially a remake, Romero has lost some ground to the 3 Stooges as Raimi's chief muse.

Evil Dead II has a truly unique tone, stemming from Raimi's appreciation of star Bruce Campbell's considerable gift for physical comedy. The scene in which Ash must defend himself from his own (possessed) right hand is a definitive moment. You know this is no ordinary zombie movie when the hand throws him into a wall and flips him head-over heels before Ash gets the better of it, and - ever resourceful - removes it with a chainsaw. After trapping the squirming hand under a bucket, a copy of Farewell to Arms is placed on top as a weight.

The movie was a success on release but with the passing of time it has become increasingly popular, and its star a certified legend of the genre. A third movie followed (Army of Darkness) and successfully recreated the spirit in a higher budget form, but it is this second installment that remains the best example of comedy-horror ever to be produced in the cinema.

Ash (Campbell), the sole survivor of "The Evil Dead," continues his struggle with the forces of the dead, with his girlfriend Linda. The two discover a mysterious tape recorder and hear the voice of Professor Knoby reciting passages from the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead. The professor's words invoke a spell that unleashes the spirit of evil alive in the remote forest surrounding them. Watch in terror as the plot sickens and the supernatural demons invade the cabin on a gory crusade for human victims. In desperation, Ash attempts to escape his horrific fate by battling with the gruesome ghouls with the help of some unexpected visitors. However, he discovers that he is no match for the unspeakable creatures lurking behind every door, and waiting beyond every corner.
