Another Tom Hanks classic. Set in WWII with phenomenal action scenes that were breathtaking. Storyline was kind of sad, but i loved the cast great choices. Still, i wish that the movie had a lot more gore and action like in the start of the movie instead of toning down to save the last son of a mother whose greiving.

i love this movie its so moving i cant believe a platoon of soldiers who are lucky just went in there by orders to go into hell get a soldier named private ryan and get him out becuase of his family its the best war movie anyone can see i wish it had a couple more hours worth cant believe the guy throwed his helmet at another soldier XD i give this a 5/5

An amazing and compelling insight to warfare. Umbelievable camera shots/angles bring World War 2 to life especially for the US troops on D-Day. The use of flash bullets, and color saturation just add to the effect of a killing ground that not many people survive to come back from THE WAR

Steven Spielberg makes a unique motion picture in regards to the D-Day invasion of World War II just in the gritty reality of the detail… For more than twenty minutes he revives for us the landing at Omaha beach… No one was prepared for how horrific it really was… No one understood what was going on: The terror, the chaos, the maelstrom of bullets, the near-deafening explosions…You really got a sense of what these guys had to go through…

Within that perplexity, the focus settles on six soldiers under the command of Capt. Miller (Tom Hanks) after they've survived their terrible hours breaking through the first line of German defense, they're given a strange perilous mission, to find one man, Pvt. Ryan (Matt Damon), a paratrooper who's somewhere behind German lines… For them, it's an abstruse order, but they have to get it done…

Throughout the film, Spielberg's attention to detail is amazing… For me, the most chilling scene in the movie is the death of an American officer… It's one of the most intimate… It's also a slightly confusing moment because two German characters resemble each other so greatly…

Toward the middle, a German soldier called "Steamboat Willie" is introduced… By the end of the film, he has become the 'bad' German… Later in the movie, another German is involved in the final fight… He takes part in an exceedingly painful scene of hand-to-hand combat with the American soldier… The two German soldiers have similar short haircuts and black uniforms… Because they looked so much alike, many of us have believed that they're one character… They're not, and the distinction of the two is very significant…

I simply adore this movie, as it is my all time favorite film. The acting is impeccable, the true beauty of this film shone in my face the first time I saw it. A melancholy, tragic war story of a man whom brothers died fighting valiantly in WWII and his mother's grieving caused the military officials to send a small search party to look for Young Private Ryan. An incredibly good story, I loved every minute of it. I felt like I was in the trenches of hell, fighting not only for my life, but courageously serving my country. Though this movie is excellently directed, made, and produced. There are a few disturbing, graphic images and wounds involving war that parents should take into careful consideration. -A man is shown bloodied with his intestines strewn about his belly, screaming and slowly succumbing to his wound. -A man's face is shown 'punched' in by something, not too graphic but rather disturbing. -A man slowly drives a knife through another man's heart; blood streams out of the wound as goes deeper into his chest cavity. -A man is shot through the gut with a bullet, he starts bleeding heavily, starts coughing up blood, and shown suffering as his comrades attempt to save him, but eventually he succumbs to his wound. -Several instances of men being ignited on fire, engulfed in flames as they slowly suffer long, horrible fates. -Many men are brutally shot through their foreheads in the battle of Normandy at the beginning. -Multiple other graphic instances of gunning and violence warfare criteria. As foul language is often used in war, there is no shortage of it in this film. Overall, this is an INCREDIBLE movie, and I strongly urge people to watch it. 10/10

American soldiers land on Omaha Beach during the D-Day landings in World War II, with multiple deaths from enemy fire. An army captain (Hanks) has been assigned to take his squad of seven men into France to find Private Ryan (Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in combat, and get him home to his grieving mother. To this end, they have to travel through treacherous German held territory. They find Ryan and a small group of Paratroopers trying to hold onto a key bridge about to be attacked by a German Panzer Group.

The film opens with some of the most devastating footage of combat ever committed to film. For twenty minutes the audience is assailed by subjective sight and sound in an attempt to recreate the feeling of being in the midst of a battle. Much of this terrifying effect is due to the camerawork of Janusz Kaminski. Having established that war is hell, the film moves into a complex examination of heroism, much of it seen through the eyes of Corporal Upham (Davies), the frightened translator, who speaks excellent German and French, but is really a civilian and the audience's surrogate. The final spectacular battle sequence is shot more objectively than the graphic opening sequence so that we can see that war is not all chaos, but tactics. Tom Hanks and the rest of the cast effectively play down any heroics.

This is truly one of the best war films of all time. It shows people how war can really be and what it can look like. The acting is amazing and the film is well shot. The actors made the film as well as the action. This fiml is a must watch!

During the Normandy landings during WW2 two brothers are killed. In another part of the world another of the Ryan brothers is killed in action, leaving their mother with one remaining son and three telegrams due to be delivered. A group of men, led by Captain Miller set out to reach Private Ryan and not only break him the news but to safely return him for return to the US.

What can I say – it is an excellent film despite some minor flaws. The plot is based on a real life situation during WW2 and allows for us to follow a group of men as they take part in the horrors (and humanity) of war. This is the film's strength and it is never stronger than in the first 25 minutes and, to a lesser extent, the final 20 minutes. The opening of the Normandy landing is simply pure emotional power and is really well done – it is so powerful that the actual plot itself is a bit of a letdown. I love Band of Brothers because the focus was on the war and what it was like to be involved rather than a sort of soap opera story. Here the plot is still very good but can't really follow that opening.

It also sinks into sentiment a tad too often. For example Ryan's mother lives in this sort of Norman Rockwell painting that is Spielberg's vision of middle America. Also there is a little too much use of gawkish dialogue as well – although it's hard to criticise the death scenes for being emotional, because they should be.

A minor flaw that is easy to get over is the lack of Brits. Like Band of Brothers (which had a few cockney accents) this is an AMERICAN film – so of course they will focus on the American experience. However it would have been nice to have some British (or any other) voices or faces among the Allies. I can understand why the film opens and closes with the stars and stripes and why the film focuses on the yanks but a little bit of perspective would be useful. There's nothing wrong with focus – but when it totally excludes huge bits of information then it's a problem. It always makes me think of the way that Michael Caine took his children back to the UK when they were taught in an US school that WW2 started in the 1940's (ie – when America joined).

However this is a minor flaw as, in fairness, it's an American film – why be surprised when it's focus is Americans! Of the cast Hanks is good – he is much more subtle than his Oscar roles where he played to the crowd. He benefits from having a great support cast of good actors, current actors, old faces, up and comers etc. Sizemore, Burns and Farina are the good current actors. Damon, Ribsi, Diesel, Martini etc are all very good on the way up – although Damon has one of the simplest characters. They may all be slight stereotypes of Americans but it's not a major flaw – just a screen writer wanting to cover all bases I think, although it does grate that they cover all these backgrounds but can't squeeze any other Allies in to the edges.

Overall it is excellent despite some stereotyping, US flag waving and the usual Spielberg love of sentimentality. Even if the actual plot is flimsy Spielberg expertly puts us as close to experiencing the horrors and the humanity within war as I hope we'll ever be.

now this is the movie that gives you a serious shock when you see it, beware because you might nit be able to complete this movie. i saw this movie when i was young from the part where they are ordered to find Pvt. Ryan so i missed the beginning, the epic beginning but still there were some violent fights throughout the movie. i decided to watch this movie again today.

yes this is one of the very best war movies, one of my all time favorites and one of the best movies ever made. i may not be able to call it the best war movie ever but i certainly will call it the most realistic depiction of war. this is another war movie from Steven Spielberg, but this time actual on field war. it is set during the invasion of Normandy in World War II. the film is a fiction account of four brothers, four sons of Agnes Allison of Port Carbon, Pennsylvania. The brothers were killed in the American Civil War but the writer decided to include that story into World War II scenario.

the opening sequence has to be one of the most memorable sequences in the history of motion Picture, the intensity of those 27 minutes is indescribable in words, shocking, intense, chilling, realistic, gory, a torture in fact. it depicts the Omaha beachhead assault of June 6, 1944. after that, seven other men along with Capt. John sets out to find Pvt. Ryan and during there are some fight scenes too but the opening was a horror a scary nightmare. and i am not saying it was awful, it was realistic in a way no one ever did and i more than appreciate Spielberg for it. you see that is exactly what happens.

Tom Hanks gave another brilliant performance. i would call it his best Non-Oscar winning performance. he was just brilliant as Captain. greatly done. and overall every other supporting cast gave some pretty good performances like, Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Jeremy Davies, Vin Diesel , Adam Goldberg , Barry Pepper , Giovanni Ribisi , Matt Damon. really emotional, strong and good performances. but Hanks was the one which actually was pitch perfect. Matt Damon in a small role leaves an impact on you.

excellent daring direction from Spielberg, many people still may think it was overdone or something. but i loved it. he deserved the awards he got for it. Screenplay was mindblowing. editing was nice. cinematography, art direction and Score were really good. effects and sounds along with make up design was something you will really like. camera movements were like so real, like we are in the middle of a war scene with live broadcast. technically spot on.

this whole experience was just epic, intense and very sad for me. a mindblowing cinematic experience. a classic. excellent movie.
