As an avid ancient historian and fan of the Romans (more so the auxiliaries, but there we go) this has to be one of the best films I have seen on the subject. It is true that, in places, the plot seems thin, the acting seems weak and the film seems to drag on, but overall you can't help but see this as a fascinating and enjoyable film for anyone who likes sword and sandal films with a bit of grit and realism rarely seen in other films. When compared with something like "The Eagle", though not a bad film, you can see that some things are better and even that they likely took the idea to make their actors speak Gaedhlig (Scots-Gaelic) from this film. Lastly, this is sort of a niche film, one not really known to many people but one that I would certainly recommend to those interested in the Roman period, as well as lovers of gore and relatively good historical accuracy.

A very good film is this also very brutal. It is well worth watching.

It's a fairly good action movie, though very historically inaccurate. Both romans and picts are portrayed too romantically, and many actual key characteristics are missing or distorted. That being said, the special effects are great and acting is superbly flawless. The plot is fictional, but very well thread, and while some characters may be hollow and even pointless, some others are wisely written and amazingly played.

Loved it more than 'Ironclad'. Bloody good British humour sort of sums it up! Nice prequel to watching 'The Eagle', as it's about the same Roman legion :-). Memories from my youth as well...
