It is adult eroticism at it's most sensuous and visual best. It is a story that revels in the binaries of the profane and grotesque, yet delights the eye with Greenaway's ability to translate a vision of love and horror into a singular statement of lush physical beauty and passionate sexuality. It is sensual, delicate and beautifully executed. The music is mysterious and sexy. The way it is filmed is pure art, like the unfolding of the pages of the book it's about.

So disturbingly strange... I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Ewan McGregor! Did he really got naked for his part in this movie? I have no words to describe this movie. It wasn't boring, but it didn't catch my attention either...

This is soft porn, basically. Any excuse for nudity... Ewan McGregor was the only worthy part of this film, but it certainly wasn't his best. Peter Greenaway makes incredibly strange films, as though experimenting with the audience, seeing whether they'll react or not, and if so, the manner of the reaction. Boredom was my initial sensation, then I felt sick to my stomach, but the boredom continued. That was my unfortunate experience, and that's how I feel about his films.

Ewan filmed this after his success with Trainspotting, looks like he should have done more crunches and laid off the endless spring of lager afforded by success. Of course, we do get to see a mile of his dick 6-inches at a time.

This type of filmmaking isn't for everyone but I think the story is genius and certainly unique. Peter Greenaway is a great director and has several other great films to see on this website if you enjoy this one. 4/5 stars from me. Visually stunning.

ugh ok I mainly picked this movie because of Ewan McGregor and if it hadn't been for him being naked so much I wouldn't have wasted my time.Despite Ewan being my fave actor I still didn't bother finishing this movie because it was so amazingly boring U_U

very interestingly shot and beautiful cinematography but really weird!!!....but you do get to see Ewan Mcgregor fully nude..alot! and yeah thats the only thing that makes this a not completly pointless film in my opinion :)
