A band of british soldiers have been sent to the scottish highlands on a special training mission. Their biggest worry is missing a vital England vs Germany world cup qualifier..... Well thats what they thought untill they found captain Ryan and his eaten squad. They then find out its werewolves and their hungry for seconds......They take refugee in what seems like a abandoned house only to find that its the werewolves home!!! A long bloody battle commences through the night. Who will survive.........

As werewolf movies go, this one was and is top shelf. Using the British military and Scottish countryside as a medium for this genre was brilliant. The story is solid and the acting is superb. Dog Soldiers is a real crowd pleaser, sure to deliver the goods. When I first saw the cover, I admit I was more than a little suspicious it might be another werewolf flop, but I was pleasantly surprised by a cinematic masterpiece!

Really? This was far from great and given way too much credit than it deserves. I happen to enjoy guns and gore and creatures of the night as much as the next person, but this just didn't measure up to expectations. How many times have we seen this situation? From Dusk Till Dawn, The Mist, Feast, Legion, Tales from the Crypt:Demon Night, all the same formula yet successfully worth the watch because there is nothing scarier than being trapped in a confined space and knowing that something out there is trying to get in to eat you alive. It wasn't so much the recycled plot, but so many details about this film just turned me off. There may have been some great actors here, but Neil Marshall's writing seemed to start strong and then got bored in the middle and then fell asleep towards the end, and if you've got that to work with, as an actor there's only so much you can do with it. Fist fights with a werewolf? really? These geriatric fur balls on stilts took out a Special Forces unit? Did you see how slow they moved? You'd think they just got their toe nails done as they had some difficulty prying open thin planks of wood. Now I cant hate on the creature design because the still shots look good, but movement looked lazy and cumbersome and the house pet had a more convincing growl. I like Sean Pertwee(Event Horizon) and Liam Cunningham(Blood: The Last Vampire), both great actors, and Neil Marshall(The Descent, Doomsday) is an amazing director, but the aftermath of Dog Soldiers I feel may have fallen outside his greater works. Makes the 1993 film "Full Eclipse" look like a Werewolf masterpiece. If most of you liked it, I would assume it was for the same small reasons I did. The actors, the action, and the gore should be enough to hold werewolf fans in attention to the end, but it just wasn't enough for me to want to watch it again. Movie's like this should have plenty of replay value, but for me "Dog Soldiers" had a bark much worse than its bite.
