On the Greek island of Skopelos, former singer Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep) now runs a rundown hotel
with her 20-year-old daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfriend). Sophie, on the eve of her wedding, steals the diary of her single mother and proceeds to track down and invite all three of her mother's ex-loves to the wedding. Sophie believes she´ll recognize her father the moment she sees the three men.
With the arrival of American businessman Sam (Pierce Brosnan), adventurous Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) and homosexual British banker Harry (Colin Firth), Donna must deal with three very different former flames.
Helping her there are her two lifelong best girlfriends: practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and the wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski).
All this, of course, is just an excuse to break out into song at the drop of a hat, with all of the major ABBA
hits used to move the story along.
Streep, is simply a force of nature; She's sensational rolling around and acting like a giggly schoolgirl, and can she ever sing "The Winner Takes It All"! Baranski and Walters are delightful. Seyfried unveils a natural singing voice.
As for the guys, both Skarsgard and Firth get through their limited vocals with seeming ease while poor
Pierce Brosnan sounds like a dying goat whenever he opens his mouth. Despite his iffy pipes, he and Streep display a remarkable chemistry!
I wouldn't be surprised if someone after watching the film rushes out to buy some knee high leather boots and iridescent bell bottomed pants.

Bill: You're not going to tell me you have a twin sister, are you?


ps If you don´t laugh while watching this movie, something must be wrong with you.

Embarrassed how much I enjoyed this. Plot is silly - who cares? None of the actors can really sing , except Amanda Seyfried a bit. Meryl put on a fabulous act though.(When you relisten to real ABBA, makes you realise not only how good the songs are, but also what GREAT voices Agnieta and Frida had). Still, I'm REALLY glad they used the real voices and didn't overdub. It makes me so sad when I watch 'My Fair Lady':they let Audrey record the songs, knowing I think that they weren't going to use them in the final cut. I'm sure she wasn't the greatest singer, but who cares? .. I just wish it was HER singing.
