What can one say? The X-Files will forever be remembered as a true hit TV show, and a breakout accomplishment for Fox. Its survived cast changes, location moves, ups and downs in ratings, and years of airing. I think I speak for everyone when I say that it has been a thrill. Chris Carter has created one of the most defining shows of the '90s. People that don't even watch the show know what it is, and EVERYONE knows who Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are, whether they've ever seen one episode or not. The show brought on a whole new level of TV entertainment in 1993, with its different, moody atmosphere, intriguing lead characters, and mind-bending plots. I admit, while watching most of the episodes, I thought, "This isn't very scary...", but then I payed attention to the detail and it got so good...the lighting, the sets...even when Mulder and Scully are outside (which is often), the sky is hardly ever sunny and bright, but rather dark and shadowy. The details on these things are terrific alone. And Chris Carter has also managed to create intense torture for the fans by forever dragging out the "Mulder and Scully in love" idea. People used to tune in to see when those two would kiss, and they had alot of fun with that, especially in the feature film. But a true sign of integrity for the show is the amount of truth in it. While the show is about the paranormal, and truth in it seems ironic, the show knows what the heck it's talking about. Every word from Scully's mouth is based on actual science. And unlike other FBI shows, The X-Files shows the FBI like it really is--not some tired cliche, but REAL people. And whenever someone, whether a fan or not, hears anything referring to aliens, they immediately think of little green men with small bodies, big heads, and large eyes...all courtesy of The X-Files. In short, this amazing television series has affected so many people. I feel blessed to have grown up with this show, rather than being born after it, doomed to see it in reruns. Because I got to be there for the ride...and though it was often bumpy and is now coming to its end...I can look back and say, "Hey, it was a GREAT 9 years."

Perfect characterization by Ribisi of the nervous, underdog, angry, vengeful kid with dangerous amounts of power. Having seen this episode three times total (twice in the recent days) I have to confess that I still don't really understand what exactly was up with that kid, played by Ribisi. Where did he derive his power from? Did it have to do with his being struck with lightning and surviving? There was some issue with continuity as well, because Ribisi didn't seem to need lightning bolts when he killed the boy in the opening sequence, nor when he was messing with the traffic lights. But on top of the hill and when he killed Jack Black, his power seems to be the ability to call lightning down from the sky. Also, why was the Sheriff so hostile toward the FBI investigation? Was there some underlying story there that didn't get fully discovered? There were definitely some questions left lingering, and it wasn't the most conclusive of episodes. Still, it was a good exercise in practical X-File investigation. And, as always, it's a bit of a letdown after the high-intensity, character development-driven episodes of Anasazi to Paper Clip. I know the post-myth arc episodes always struggle to make a smooth transition back to normal X-File life. This without a shadow of a doubt is in my top five favorite X-Files episodes. Nonetheless with that being said, I still find this episode very intriguing, and I must confess It's on my top 10 "Favorite X-Files Episodes" list. 8/10

First seasons of TV shows are always the hardest to review, mainly because of the seemly-unfocused nature of them. For Fox’s series The X-Files this no expectation, while the show seems to find it’s footing late, it is a great original footing of at that.

For those who have never seen the show it’s basically a paranormal twist on the modern police procedural. The show follows the exploits of agent Fox Mulder and Dana Scully members of the FBI’s paranormal task force know as the X-Files. From the UFO sighting to paranormal activity, their investigators lead them to some of the most mysterious cases around. However the true basis of the show is the back and forth between lead actors David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully), the comparison between paranormal believers (Mulder) and the scientific world (Scully).

Both actors more that embody their characters, Duchovny especially sells the character of Fox Mulder, a calculated yet somewhat unhinged agent who is driven to find "The Truth". To his opposite is the brilliant and scientifically grounded Dana Scully assigned to the unit for the simple reasoning as to debunk Mulder’s often-fantastical explanations. This back and forth dynamics is what came to make the X-Files so special and memorable.

Unlike most police procedurals of the day the X-Files was unconventional with both an overarching narrative following Mulder and Scully search for "The Truth". The show occasionally investigates urban myths (such as "The Jersey Devil", in Season 1) which often feel like filler in the first season compared to the larger overarching plot. While this is not say that these episodes are somehow bad, they sometimes feel like off episodes in the season.

One of the greatest early strengths of the show is the lack of a visible antagonist throughout the early half of the season. The only really visible enemy to Mulder and Scully is the mysterious Smoking Man and/or Cancer Man (played by a cold and quiet William B. Davis) who is somehow involved in the cover-up that Mulder seeks. Many of the episodes involving him tend to be the most compelling and interesting episodes in the season. One in particular "Deep Throat" is probably the single most memorable episode in the season, also the first to feature Mulder and Scully’s early ally "Deep Throat" keeping with the conspiracy base of the show, which follows Mulder’s chase after a supposed government used UFO.

While the show is not flawless start to finish the first season of The X-Files shows us that the complex chemistry of all the characters makes for compelling television. While some elements of the show are borrowed from police procedural of the day The X-Files is able to develop its own elements and style. Furthermore the first season shows the true early potential of this groundbreaking show.
