World War II. After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

The last superhero installment before "The Avengers" comes out, Captain America seems at some times, a picture postcard from the 1940's and at other times a plot ripped off of a James Bond movie. This movie is overall OK, but it seems like the filmmakers care more about getting audiences prepped for The Avengers than they do about making a good superhero movie.

Couldn't have been better the action with the comedy was perfect. The way they kept the original comics in it was awesome. Acting was brilliant and the way they did the ending was fantastic. One of the best movies of the summer by far. I give this movie 5/5 for its well rounded action, acting and comedic timing!!

Not really being that big of a Captain America fan (he was always just kind of there) from a comics standpoint, I kept my expectations low for the movie. But I think its safe to say that even if they were pretty high they would've been met. Director Joe Johnston more than makes up for The Wolf Man with this. It was fun, the action was great and the story was there. it had a real Saturday matinee quality that very few movies have pulled off. There was not a bad performance to be found and Chris Evans makes a MUCH better Steve Rogers than a Johnny Storm. The futuristic 40s Hydra technology and the 40s Asian hipster were the only 2 false notes. God, how I wish another one could take place in this era but I was left psyched for The Avengers. This just might be the best Marvel movie yet.

This movie had its moments. I wish they had more one on one fight scenes. but they had to introduce the character and complete the mission in one movie. 7/10
Because they were creative in using technology but not going over. This movie would be great for children because it has the elements of "the little engine that could" .

Skinny man turn buff hunk!!! At least it's more believable than being bitten by a spider and turning from high school geek to superhero.

Good story - line. There seems to be a lot of films coming out about superheroes at the moment and they all seem to lack that action as they are establishing the character, however with this one I believe that the character was quickly established and there was a fair amount of action that I would expect from a Marvel comic book hero.

This is an excellent slice of real 'boys own' fun. The film moves at a good pace and never gets bogged down by the fact that it is an introductory story. It has plenty of action, top notch effects as you would expect, (a skinny, scrawny Chris Evans is brilliant) and he himself proves he was the right choice to head a big movie for the first time. I personally love the mixture of wartime, secret weapons and special powers; it's a good mix of reality and fantasy. With some nice touches of humour thrown in, this is a movie to escape into for a couple of hours and forget about life for a while. Action, adventure, exlposions, and the big hero. Absolutely excellent fun!

This movie was action packed. I kept waiting to see what kind of powers he would have but strength and speed seemed to be enough to beat the villan. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it an 8. Other reviewers seemed to have liked the ending, I did not.

This movie was actually pretty good! It was not that bad at all and I came into this one expecting the worst. The reason is that I came up in the 80's and have seen my fair share of super hero movies and television series bomb drastically.

The action sequences in this film were good and kept you at the edge of your seat at times. The acting was good as well as the cinematography. It was nice to see the story about the beginnings of Captain America and the ending left it open for a few more installments with Captain America in modern day times. Definitely worth a watch and the quality of the film itself is not half bad.

Wow. This movie was a great way to introduce him as the first avenger. Wasn't sure hot they would tie it in to all the others until the end, but still a good movie for all avengers fans. Definitely a great superhero movie. A solid 8 out of 10 from me.

ok so i am still gonna prefer Thor over this movie. i really think this is the most overrated movie of the summer by Critics and audience both. also the most overrated Marvel Comics movie. i just son't know why is everyone overrating it so much. i wasn't much excited for it though it looked good. i thought i'll have a nice time, and i did, but a forced one. this movie still is quite different from other movies that were out this summer. it has uniqueness in it and that is something i liked really alot. and i will really remember this movie for a while, not gonna forget it like Green Lantern.

so finally a modern movie on Captain America. the comic book readers and fans were waiting for it and they enjoyed and loved this movie alot obviously, i am not saying i didn't liked it or it was bad but i just have some problems with it and i am gonna state the positive traits too.

Directed by Joe Johnston who directed movies like The Wolfman, Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III, October Sky, Jumanji , The Rocketeer and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. yes a very long list and also many of these movies are bad. this was a good effort. his direction was better in this movie but i am not sure about giving a Comic based superhero movie to him. he was just nice. Screenplay needed some really careful work i mean seriously? Plot was not very good i'll be honest it was a near bore and near bad. movie start slow, get slower then freezes while towards the end it gets fast. uneven plot and a below average screenplay. cinematography was just fine. art direction was excellent, costumes were good. score was nice.

special effects were a big big problem because first of all there weren't many and secondly, they looked so unreal. CGI wasn't good according to me and 3D wasn't needed. it lacked action, no nothing for an hour. but towards the end some scenes were really good but nothing very special or great memorable scene. talking about actors, Chris Evans was cast as Capt. America, he played another superhero and now this but this one suits on him more. he looked good and believable in his character. i liked him and he acted nicely. Tommy Lee Jones was good and so was Stanley Tucci as always. nice job. and Hugo Weaving as a bad guy was wow.

this movie is set in the World war 2 and Nazi's time with more advances and technology. all of it looked good. but the movie at many times felt boring to me. there wasn't much in it. i enjoyed less than i thought i will but still i had a nice time. this is an average superhero movie.

It was a good and fairly watchable movie up until the last ten minutes, which played like War on Terror propaganda (especially with that recruitment poster - can we get more blatant?). The fact that they ruined what could have been a wonderful ending for the sake of trying to manipulate public opinion and equating our modern invasions with world war II really turned me against this movie. The plotline of Captain America as the white savior for all the non-white or non-american GIs is consistently annoying however.

Hugo Weaving is awesome, as is Tommy Lee Jones. Samuel L. Jackson is barely there, which is fine with me, as I usually find him a little too stilted.

Hayley Atwell was amazing - channelling Jennifer Garnier and Kate Beckingsale, she was extremely watchable and really added some energy to the movie. She's the number one reason you should watch this movie. Chris Evans was just so so.

This was a pretty good movie I really enjoyed it. It was just a few things I didn't like. I didn't like the times they only showed a glimpse/few seconds of some of the action scenes. A lot of them looked epic...but maybe they did that because they wasted a lot of UN-needed time showing how they were using him as a puppet to raise money for the military and war. The time they used for that could have been used for more action but like I said I really enjoyed the movie, and by me being a comic fan...I wasn't disappointed to much on how they did the storyline. I'd definitely watch this movie again sometime soon! Good job marvel! All I'm going to say to the people who haven't seen it yet...just like every other marvel movie stick it out till then end of the credits =)

This is a great movie that really met my expectations with both the story and the cast.It is packed with action and mystery as the lead caracter Steve Rogers goes from being a skinny kid to being a hero.
The special efects are great and the actors really make this film worth watching!

Captain America: The First Avenger” turns out in the end — and this is really the opposite of a spoiler — to have been a two-hour teaser for another movie. That picture, foreshadowed in the second “Hulk,” the first “Thor” and both “Iron Man” episodes and scheduled to open next May, will be called “The Avengers.” Whether you regard its imminence with resignation, dread or uncontainable glee depends on your standing in the Marvel Universe. Shareholders and die-hard fans no doubt already have the opening date circled on their calendars, and many of the rest of us will probably show up as well, either out of curiosity or solemn duty.

It was good, 6/10 stars I dont think it was better then Batman. But better then Thor. I cant say one thing wrong was, that Captian America was the same dude from fantastic four. I wish it was a new face but any who. He did a good job. Plus Red Skull looked cool.

okay movie...because first of the costume was kinda gay...the beginning was boring. Secondly they really need to put in some action parts. It will make the movie much better..The movie seems short..And i hated how the movie ended..Stop the talking makes the movie boring af...so this my very own Opinion dont take it the wrong way

It was a pleasure to realize, once "Captain America: The First Avenger" got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it's loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it's preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than "Thor" or "Green Lantern."

The words "The First Avenger" are fraught with significance for Marvel fans. We have already had films inspired by Iron Man, the Hulk and Thor. Still to come, without doubt, are Ant-Man and Wasp. This film opens with the discovery of an enormous flying wing embedded in polar ice, and when a gloved hand reaches out to brush away the ice on a window, why, there's Captain America's shield! This film's plot involves his origin story and adventures during World War II, and I'm sure we'll discover in sequels that he was revived after the cryogenic nap to crusade again in the new day.

We open with an archetypal 90-pound weakling; comic books of that period featured ads showing muscle men kicking sand into the face of such specimens, who were advised to mail-order Charles Atlas for body-building help. Young Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a puny Brooklyn kid who is routinely beat upon by bullies; he dreams of joining the Army and defending America against the Nazis. Turned down as 4-F, he tries again and again to enlist, and eventually makes it into basic training, where he's always falling off the rope and bringing up the rear.

But the kid has courage. This attracts the attention of the hard-boiled Col. Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and a scientist named Erskine (Stanley Tucci), who supervises a secret government program. In no time at all, and without really receiving any explanation, he's being strapped into an ominous sarcophagus in Erskine's laboratory, which emits sparks and smoke, and eventually the new Steve Rogers, now a foot taller and built like Mr. Universe. He adopts a costume and a stars-and-stripes shield, which serve primarily to make him highly visible, although the shield has special powers (but apparently only when it's positioned correctly).

Young Steve's Army confidante both before and after his transformation is the sultry Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), whose full red lips make her resemble a classic military pin-up of the period. He narrates their tour of the Brooklyn neighborhoods where he was picked on, and they grow close, but only PG-13 close, because Marvel has apparently determined that fanboys find sex to be icky.
Now the full-bodied story comes into play, involving, as all good comic-book movies must, a really first-rate villain. This is a Nazi commandant named Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), who essentially controls his own private army and has schemes of surpassing Hitler. His minions salute him, not Der Fuhrer, and he has dreams of creating super weapons. Eventually, as the rules of comic-book drama require, Captain America will pair off against Schmidt, who is revealed to be the hideous Red Skull, whose skin tone makes him resemble those ducks marinated in red sauce you sometimes see hanging in Chinatown restaurant windows. Schmidt demonstrates once again that, when it comes to movie villains, you can't do better than Nazis.

The film pays full dues to Marvel mythology, providing Captain America with his sidekick Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), not such a kid as he was in the comics. We also meet Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), who supports Erskine's research and will eventually, as we know, father Iron Man. And there is Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), another World War II hero destined to graduate to his own comic book and, no doubt, movie. Jackson has the chops to play a first-rate superhero.

The adventures of Captain America are fabricated with first-rate CGI and are slightly more reality-oriented than in most superhero movies — which is to say, they're still wildly absurd, but set up and delivered with more control. CGI makes another invaluable contribution to the movie, by shrinking the 6-foot Chris Evans into a vertically challenged 90-pound weakling, and then expanding him dramatically into the muscular Captain America. This is done seamlessly; I doubted there was a single shot in the movie showing Evans as he really is, but no: I learn the full-size Captain is the real Evans, bulked up.

I enjoyed the movie. I appreciated the 1940s period settings and costumes, which were a break with the usual generic cityscapes. I admired the way that director Joe Johnston ("October Sky" and "Jumanji") propelled the narrative. I got a sense of a broad story, rather than the impression of a series of sensational set pieces. If Marvel is wise, it will take this and "Iron Man" as its templates. See it in 2-D if you can.

Although this particular Marvel film, was supposed to be Stan Lee's favourite of the heroes, I cant understand why ?! In a upsetting performance by Chris Evans, this film for me was an incredible let down, the only thing here that even comes close to making this film great is the villianous Red Skull and HYDRA which admittedly was worth the wait throughout the marvel films such as Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. But other than that, the shear cheesieness of Bucky and the fact that Germans write in English.
