Roman Polanski's Repulsion is a journey into someones mind as they slowly go insane. Catherine Deneuve plays Carol, a Manicurist in a London salon. She shares a flat with her sister and her sisters boyfriend brings out her dislike towards men. When her sister and her boyfriend go on holiday Carol is left alone in the flat and has moments of catalepsy and hallucinations increase and deepen into madness. This film is brilliant especially for the time and you question if it is in fact made in 65'. The film is proof enough that a fair amount of non-dialogue coupled with great camera technique and music is sometimes much more effective than a full script. The innocence portrayed by Deneuve is contrasted with her violent outbursts to make what is a fairly uncomfortable feel. Deneuve who was only 22 at the time was i think, a contributing factor for the whole feel of the main character. The film isnt perfect, there are shadows, even occasionally with camera, that Carol walks through, but this shouldnt be seen as a bad thing because the deliberate imperfect nature of the filming makes the decline into madness more realistic and engrossing. Carols descent into madness is amazing. This is a brilliant film. Every possible element is here, from shocks, to realism. You can really feel for the main character, her repulsion of sexuality and anything to do with Sex is shown in a lot of ways. I would encourage everybody to see this film, insisting it is necessary viewing for any genuine film fan. 9.4/10
