Out in the Silence: A gray winter sky hangs over lonely city streets, rotted oil derricks, and abandoned factories. This is Oil City, Pennsylvania, a fading industrial town in the heart of the American rust belt. It is the sort of town that Barrack Obama had in mind when he made his infamous comments about bitter small town residents clinging to their guns and religion as they watch the rest of the world pass them by. The peace and quiet is shattered when the filmmaker, Oil City native Joe Wilson, places the announcement of his wedding to another man in the local paper. The announcement catches the eye of Kathy Springer, a local woman whose teenage son, CJ, is being brutally tormented at school because he is gay. Ignored by the school authorities and with no where else to turn, she seeks help from Wilson and they begin a difficult but ultimately successful struggle to take on the school authorities who made every day "eight hours of pure hell" for CJ. The announcement has a very different effect on Diane Gramley, head of the local chapter of the ultra-conservative American Family Association. Infuriated by the prospect of the "homosexual agenda" invading her little town, she issues an action alert calling on townspeople to denounce same sex marriage and all other forms of "perversion". Over the next four years Wilson navigates the ins and outs of being different in a conservative small town. He makes an unexpected friendship with an evangelical pastor that demonstrates the understanding that can develop when people on different sides of an issue lay down their swords and get to know one another. And he helps a lesbian couple renovate an historical downtown theatre that could catalyze the town's economic revitalization - if the community will accept them. The greatest change occurs in Wilson himself as he realizes that while maverick acts such as the publication of his wedding announcement can create a splash, creating lasting change in small towns takes the courage and ongoing commitment of local folks to speak out and live openly. |

Thank someone god I am an Atheist. I am really tired though of the human race believing in man made writings written by humans who did not know anything about the natural world as we know it today. You just have to educate yourselves on what we have learned in just in the passed twenty years and are still learning. And not some make belief book, that no one ever reads all of! They just cherry pick. The mass brainwashing of the human race has to come to an end.It has been going on way to long.We will not move forward as a species until it does.We are not special we are apart of!!

Amazing, this is a very well done documentary; but do not forget that (unfortunately) those are the places where most politicians are looking for, (while whoring themselves) people who give their votes to become President, Senators, Representatives, Governors, etc., is disgusting, really! Another reason why not to believe in politicians, once occupy their offices, they forget those less fortunate, create their laws in favor of 3 percent of the population (the racists, homophobes, the rich, the ignorant, that that violates human rights, etc), then they just look at the rest of the population eye to eye when they need your vote one more time, and history repeats itself, because then wash their hands like Pontius Pilate, is truly disgusting!

just simply wonderful...truly uplifting and made me smile like a clown for almost the entire duration of it! I loved it, and it just goes to show that there are lessons to be learned about the person behind the label and boundaries that are still today in desperate need of crossing! The kid in this was great, and very cute I might add...!lol

My mother always told me that if you have a problem that you can't solve "Time will take care of it" People not matter what faith you are always scared of any change and in life we all change in some way or form. I this movie I saw that change even a little bit. My mother also said "You shall see evil of what it really is" and the evil in this case was that the fear that some people use against other people to divide us as human beings not looking at the fact that how we together change for the better can happen no matter how small it is. This movie shows how "One persons fears can be another persons triumphs." Which was shown in this movie. I loved this movie and it shows "Life is not hard, People make life hard!"
