Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Basic Training & Self Defense Techniques: Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Basic Training & Self Defense TechniquesBruce Lee, the legend of martial arts and motion pictures, first studied Wing Chun Kung Fu in Hong Kong under the tutelage of Yip Man. When he came to the United States, Lee developed a concept of martial arts for the individual man that he labeled Jeet Kune Do - the way of the intercepting fist. His first book, The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, became a standard in the martial arts field. It was followed by Bruce Lee s Fighting Method a series of four volumes complied by Lee s friend and student M. Uyehara. This DVD covers the first two volumes of Lee s fighting method Basic Training and Self-Defense Techniques. Topics include warm-ups, basic exercises, on-guard positions, footwork, power training, speed training and self-defense techniques. Demonstrating the techniques in this DVD presentation are Ted Wong and Richard Bustillo. Wong trained with Lee toward the later stages of Jeet Kune Do s development, becoming Lee s last major private student. He appeared with Lee in the photo techniques of the Bruce Lee s Fighting Method books and is considered to be Lee s protégé, being one of four to receive direct certification from Lee. After Lee s death, Wong chose not to teach Jeet Kune Do publicly, instead establishing a semiprivate, nonprofit school in San Francisco in 1990. Bustillo is the director and co-founder of the International Martial Arts and Boxing Academy in Carson, California. He has more than 30 years of experience in the martial arts, is a senior instructor of Lee s Jeet Kune Do concepts and as a member of the Black Belt Hall of Fame, is always in high demand on the international martial arts seminar circuit.

also these days defend yourself with minimum force..dont break anything, damage eyes or leave big bruises just incapacitate as effective but with the least amount of bodily destruction as possible as these days you can be charged with gbh even in self defence, you have to be careful these days how much damage you do, incapacitate and run, don't severely damage the opponent as you may get in legal bother in these nanny state times

i posted my comment fully spaced into neat paragraphs but the box squashed it all together i appologise if it is hard to read but i feel it is a very important point about jeet kun do that must be understood.

jeet kun do is not a style it is cutting away what does not work and keeping what does, it is a method of thinking and fighting so you take the best parts of what you learn and retain them without the useless formality of the martial art you have learned from. you could be a jeet kun do artist or painter or sculptor it is not a martial art style but a way of approaching knowledge in the arena of self defense and combat, a pragmatic ever dynamic and flowing perfection of cutting away dogma, regulations, restrictions, traditions, Kata, formal sets etc and keeping what is effective for YOU in a combat situation and also the same dynamic approach needs to be taken to fitness and health which are essential for a good martial artist. as lee said in the way of the dragon his master asks 'what is the highest technique you strive for?' lee says 'to have no technique...when they expand i contract, when they contract i expand and when the opportunity is there i do not attack, it (his fist) attacks for me' if you do Shotokan only for example or even jeet kun do exactly how lee did it, you are being made to learn a martial art that may not be suited to you and may not be of use in a real self defense situation. EVERY persons jeet kun do is THEIR jeet kun do, i am not as fast or flexible as Bruce lee so i incorporate techniques from other martial arts that use different strengths i have. a fat out of shape man can be an expert of jeet kun do, obviously fast kicks and punches are no good so he would dynamically look at himself and possibly incorporate effective throws, wresting moves, sumo moves, trips, locks and techniques where he can use his body weight instead of speed to fight...barging, tacking with momentum, possibly aikido techniques. everyone's jeet kun do is unique as it is not a set style but the style with no style; it is flowing and dynamic and it should be tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of each student...a man with no arms uses his legs, a thin not too strong but agile and a flexible man should learn to move quickly, duck, weave, rope a dope and strike fast when the opportunity arises, each person is unique and has strengths and weaknesses and attributes others do not. if you are not physically perfected, lightening fast and do not know how to kick and punch effectively it would be foolish to try to fight exactly as lee did, instead you must dynamically take techniques that work from different fighting arts and discard those that do not; that is jeet kun do it is just a name for a way of thinking and a philosophy...not a set fixed style

i really don't think this was released in 2005- maybe mid 80's to early 90's. at any rate, "a Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it... Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back" -bruce lee. this is very much a common sense method; not too external or internal.
