I don't see her "using" men at all, it's the converse...she puts herself at their mercy for protection, considering her options and those class conscious, chauvinist times, and she is deserted when,and left to fend for herself pregnant. She has a girlish innocence and charm juxtaposed with a passionate ambition to better herself the best she knows how...
