i see what you are saying but weird or WHAT covers more than weird or SOMETHING ELSE. the word WHAT in this instance an cover a noun complete which is a person, place or THING, where as SomeTHING is rather limited to what it can cover. i do not know what country you are from and yes this saying might seems different to you but in my travels in the military thorugh out the united states for training i've heard "is that weird or what" tons of times. i think for it being a show form the states it fits perfectly.
