Planet of the Apes: Taylor and two other astronauts come out of deep hibernation to find that their ship has crashed. Escaping with little more than clothes they find that they have landed on a planet where men are pre-lingual and uncivilized while apes have learned speech and technology. Taylor is captured and taken to the city of the apes after damaging his throat so that he is silent and cannot communicate with the apes.

I found myself avoiding all of the recent spin-off's in this series for fear that they weren't going to be my thing. However It dawned on me that I NEEDED to see the original. Loved it. This movie is great. I could explain why, but just watch it for yourself and you'll see.

WOW, this is a older movie, didn't realize this movie was like 44 years old even though I've watched it before. They did a great job, never did like the way it ended though.

The "reimagineered" version in 2001 was crap! This original is still one of the best sci-fi films ever made, and the 2nd one Beneath The Planet Of The Apes wasn't bad either!

Its a madhouse,a madhouse,a madhouse!!!!!!!! Is there really anything else to be said about this classic Sci/Fi Masterpiece? Richard matheson and Charlton Heston all rolled into ONE!The First of Five Movies and a shortlived T.V.series with a saturdaymorning cartoon anime(american) that followed...Hopefully Tim Burton will follow up his version with a sequel starring hometown hero,Johnny Depp, from the bluegrass state....

Awesome Movie. Just watched it for the first time. Too bad The Simpsons spoiled the Ending for me. :P I still think the Novel was inspired by H.G. Wells: The Time Machine though.

This is a must see movie even if you were not born when it was shown,( most of you were not) the acting for a 60's film is top rate and the plot is timeless, this is more art then cinema, the rating for this movie is more then 10 ...I have watched this film 3 times just this week...I am going to burn it on DVD for my kids to watch it..

I wanted to see this movie mainly because i am so excited for rise of the planet of the apes. I wasnt surprised by the ending mainly because i know what happened already. However, this movie was made in the 60s and for that time period i could see why it was a classic. It was a pretty neat movie. 4/5

What I don't understand is how come it is not once mentioned in any of the ape movies that it is man who has evolved from apes and not the other way around!

It had been so long since I'd seen this that I forgot many of the key points. I just saw "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" so was inspired to see the original. It's hard to judge it by today's standards. Visually it was very dated at times - often handled in a clumsy, almost old TV (like Star Trek)type of shooting style. A lot of long or medium shots to optimize coverage and with little use of close ups. The dialogue was often "on the nose" also, just like 50's and 60's TV. I could feel Rod Serling's touch on the whole production, which while great for a 22 minute TV show, came off as laborious for a story over 2 hours. But enough of the picking. The ideas were sound, especially so for the time, and that is why this film was so successful and generated so many spin-offs. It made me want to see the 2001 remake, to see how it was modernized. I would give it 2 out of 5 for technical merits, but 3 out of 5 for story, which = 2 1/2 stars in total.

An irresistible watch, this can be categorized as sci-fi, social commentary, and action film all rolled up into a ball of mindless fun. This film sucked me in, and I graciously watched with all the intent of a dog chasing a flashlight beam. It was inventive with its pristine special effects, make-up, and action packed sequences, including a crash landing into a river, sweeping views of a desolate wasteland, and the always dramatic reveal of the planet's hierarchy: apes riding horses. Even today that simple image takes your breath away. The story revolves around Heston, who is perfect for this gimmicky performance, full of loud cackles, toothy grins, and swearing with a cigar crunched in his mouth. Instead of insinuating that humans are the aliens on a planet unknown to us, there's a feeling of mistaken identity, Heston crammed into the personification of a lesser race of beings also inhabiting the planet. As Heston's intelligence is revealed, it's more of a psychological, societal, and even emotional picture, one that addresses racial pretensions, the separation of church and state, science and religion, civil rights, and wartime ambitions, all to claim that man will somehow kill itself off with its technological exploits. Going in I knew the ending, but it seemed obvious from the get-go, so it did ruin it for me. Its deeply cerebral, but surely funny, as many gags make it as campy as intellectual, which turned some people off to it and Heston's overacting; but I believe it drives the film further along. I was upset by the misogynistic views that the film took towards the character of Nova, but at least Kim Hunter gave an intelligent performance as Dr. Zira. It's fun, it's dramatic, it's an ape of a good time.
