The Ruling Class: A member of the House of Lords dies in a shockingly silly way, leaving his estate to his son. Unfortunately, his son is insane: he thinks he is Jesus Christ. The other somewhat-more respectable members of their family plot to steal the estate from him. Murder and mayhem ensues. |

Magnificent performance of O'Toole at the top of his form; acid satire of Britain's "ruling class"...do things ever really change?

Petr O'Toole deservedly got a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in this film!

A true `Must See Film' for anyone who enjoys a juicy, sardonic, intelligent black comedy, especially when the topic focuses on the silly pomposity of the British upper classes.

It's very easy to class this as self indulgent absurdist satire, but I think people who see it that way have intellectually missed the beat. As with all the best satire behind the silliness it's absoloutly dead on the money in terms of how the 'Ruling Class' see themselves even in this modern century, and as an amalgam of the absurdity of the class system it paints a picture any good historian would recognise. And you're right Peter O' Toole rightly deserved his nomination for this A classic, 9/10

Tiresome overacting throughout by Peter O'Tool, portraying a camp and self-obsessed English earl, who thinks he is God, but looks like a transvestite version of Jesus, in girly wigs and with woman's make-up.

From Edward Bond's play. Projectile vomit of class hatred. It's a gag a line, but as there's no warmth, for me, it's not actually funny. He's a 'committed' writer, so though it would have been easy to make some of these characters sympathetic - the god-complex-turned-ripper Jack, or the inbred dimwit cousin - Bond doesn't. I think it's called 'alienation'... don't cutify the b*g*ers [like the equally execrable in his way PG Wodehouse] lest your smiting hand hesitate when the revolution comes... ;-) For me: dull, overlong, self-important, missable.
