Watch Agora: Alexandria, 391 AD: Hypatia teaches astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Her student Orestes is in love with her, as is Davus, her personal slave. As the city's Christians, led by Ammonius and Cyril, gain political power, the great institutions of learning and governance may not survive. Jump ahead 20 years: Orestes, the city's prefect, has an uneasy peace with Christians, led by Cyril. The Christians enforce public morality; first they see the Jews as their obstacle, then nonbelievers. Hypatia has no interest in faith; she's concerned about the movement of celestial bodies and the brotherhood of all. What place is there for her?

by the way, good movie, kinda complicated if you have strong christian beliefs, cuz they love to think about themselves as martirs, and this movie shows how it probably was... but every fanatic is like a potential murder... no matter the dogma!

I guess we'll never know what really happened, cuz it seems that it's human nature to burn and erase every small piece of info that a "pagan" culture may have... christians erased big part of human history, the most intresting and actually cultural one... when the muslims came they probably only had a couple of bibles to burn. But as someone said PEOPLE ARE RESPONSABLE FOR WARS... if it is due to religion is just to loose your head. For me, religion has nothing to do with faith, your god may have many names, but I'm sure that none of them would tell you to kill someone, that's just human sh*t. Humans are by far the worse plague on earth!

zealotry, the worst what can happen. fanatics do always something stupid. as they did in this movie. This is just fiction. There is not much of true in it. But I like it. Rachel was 4,8/5. :)

For me, this movie has everything or, at least, tells everything about human nature: intellectual curiosity, love feelings, forgiveness, violence, political and religious oppression. All of them (and their complex interrelations) convincingly portrayed in the context of a historical turning point, make a truly classic film with a lot to tell about the conflicts of contemporary time, of every time. Rachel Weisz is more than perfect as Hypatia of Alexandria. Beautiful views of the ancient city. Don't miss the incredible zooms. One of the very few films to effectively express the intimate emotion and awe of scientific discovery.

We humans are terrible! We never did learn that we are all the same, made of flesh and blood, no matter what color, religion of nation we are and we never will learn. And men, they have always feared strong, smart and beautyful women, calling them witches or whores. Women should rule the world, than it would be a much better place to live in.

If the "un-disclosed desires" with-in the hearts of men on mass are unleashed their is no telling what may happen. History has witnessed this often enough- man was one again blinded by poisons of it's own devising-- The ironic symbolism in the bible is clear, the *lambs* will open the seals to the apocalypses /The lambs are themselves the seals...-- Philosophy is the bewitchment of the mind though the use of language --Ludwig Wittgenstein--

Very good movie, and would highly reccomend it (unless you are a strong christian, as you may find it hard to accept the violence of christianity early on). The story was very well told and although not totally accurate was very close to it. To movieho, I would like to point out that the term 'pagan' does not refer to a particular religeon, but to someone who does not follow one of the main faiths, in this case christianity and judeism so although Hypatia was a 'pagan' this could actually mean many things. This showa a time in history when the rise of religeon heralded the surpression of knowledge and freedom of thought and you can see startling similarities to the way the world is heading today. The new 'religeon' of man made global warming follows the same patterns, with scientific knowledge being surpressed to support the popular theory and those scientists who draw other conclusions being labeled as 'heretics' and 'in the pay of the multi nationals'. Lets try and learn from our history instead of constantly returning to the same scenarios.

Word pagan means only one thing: Savage. In that time pagans lived in mostly primitive ways, not even close to slave owning philosophers that happen to be ateists. Nice of you to talk about the violence of christianity in the dark ages forgetting that comparing to non-christians in that time it was a heaven. Slavery,no law what so ever for the poor, no real care, nothing but blind worship of their liders. God is and allways will be a path of peace and love, I wrote a comment on that above, but this movie is far,far from the real story. Chrisitians were not brutal then judging by the standards of that time, they were better then the rest.

Like I said: First Godhoods were made to explain natural manifestations that a primitive human didn't know how to explain. There was no knowlege on eletricity in 10 000 BC to explain thunder,so they understood it as gods. Im an ortodox christian so all I can say to ignorant satanists, pardon ateists is this: Any real religion is a path of peace and love, from Christianity to Islam. Its your own democrats (communists etc. any polititians) that made wars, not religions. They just used religions to get as much suports so actualy its money grabing people that don't belive in God (by any other name) thus not respecting or loving him well not even fearing, better know as ateists that are too blame for all those lies you turn around to blame God for. Its human to blame for bad things that happened not God,so only a cinical polititian or a simular scum bag can turn around the facts to blame God and his belivers for the things that none belivers did. As a wise man said: In politics,God is only real as an accused. So they say God isnt real but when "he" is to be blame, they'll make him as real as it can be. I say this because this movie is an example of that. Its historisly inccorect to riddicules mesures, a channel seen in the movie is bilt in the 19th century. Shee wasnt a philosopher but a pagan (what a turn around that is).

Really loved what I saw of this film but all 5 versions I tried buffered so much, like every minute and a half that I had to turn it off. Darn it I really want to see this movie. Maybe I'll try again in a while.

Trivia; There were days when shooting had to delay for a few seconds. This was because of the nearby churches of Kalkara, Vittoriosa amongst others which have their bells obviously ringing at mid-noon. These bells have been in use for decades. The bells could be heard from the sets of Ricasoli
