El espinazo del diablo: It is 1939, the end of three years of bloody civil war in Spain, and General Franco's right-wing Nationalists are poised to defeat the left-wing Republican forces. A ten-year-old boy named Carlos, the son of a fallen Republican war hero, is left by his tutor in an orphanage in the middle of nowhere. The orphanage is run by a curt but considerate headmistress named Carmen and a kindly Professor Casares, both of whom are sympathetic to the doomed Republican cause. Despite their concern for him, and his gradual triumph over the usual schoolhouse bully, Carlos never feels completely comfortable in his new environment. First of all, there was that initial encounter with the orphanage's nasty caretaker, Jacinto, who reacts even more violently when anyone is caught looking around a particular storage room the one with the deep well. Second, and more inexplicable, is the presence of a ghost, one of the former occupants of the orphanage named Santi. Not long after Carlos' arrival, Santi latches onto Carlos, badgering him incessantly at night and gloomily intoning, "Many of you will die." As if that wasn't enough to keep the orphanage's occupants in an unrelenting state of terror, there's the un-exploded bomb that dominates the orphanage's courtyard, still ticking away; With the orphanage left defenseless by its isolation, and the swift progression of Franco's troops, the ghost's prediction seems depressingly accurate. Nevertheless, with every step of the plot, it becomes apparent that the ghost's predictions as to who (or what) will die, the real source of danger and even the definition of death itself may be more ambiguous than first thought. |

A captivating movie. As it centers around the lives of young orphan boys, you immediately feel for them, seeing everything through their innocent view of the world, aside from the few adults, providing quite a different perspective. It starts with the question, "What is a ghost?", preparing you for what is to come. Brilliant imagery and visual effects . A wonderful film to lose yourself in, especially if you like to at all feel scared. Top marks from me!

"What is a ghost?".The story has poetic depth. It may not be very horror-esque but that doesn't make it any less worthy. I give this film high praise. I even liked it better than "Pan's Labyrinth" (ESPECIALLY the exquisite ending!). FORCEFUL (A grain of strength!). ^^^^ "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth" are parts of del Toro's Spanish Civil War trilogy, still in development. The third and final part "3993" probably won't get released until 2014. Guillermo del Toro wrote: "3993 is a movie that, if I do it, would close the trilogy, because it's about a character in 1993 who believes that civil war is a thing of the past. And something from 1939 comes to life and proves that it's not — that it's pretty much alive."

Perhaps the description should be shortened? I think it gives a bit too much away. Anyway, fantastic movie - atmospheric and thought-provoking, 9/10.

I really liked this movie, it showed thriller with a little drama in it. Which makes a kick ass movie! 4/5

For me, this is much closer to drama than horror. The only thing that makes this even close to horror are the horrible issues that the movie is based upon. The perspective on the characters spontaneously switched from being good to bad, and the other way around, giving you an end that you might never would have imagined. It's by all means a very beautiful movie but when you go to see this with the thought of it being a good 'horror' movie, you might get a little disappointed. 2.5/5.

Warning this was not a horror movie... more like spaghetti western meets a hokey ghost story.. The Orphanage was way better. I had to keep my eyes open on this one. 1/5

Beautifully written, although quite creepy it never strays from the sadness in the story of the children and the haunting past of the orphanage.
