in this satirical comedy, a hotly contested high school election becomes a metaphor for the current state of American politics. Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) is a popular and well-respected instructor at George Washington Carver High School in Omaha, Nebraska, but lately he's been unhappy in both his personal and professional life, and his anxieties finally come to a head with the school's student elections. Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is running for student body president, and she certainly seems like the sort of girl who would win a high school election -- she's pretty, popular and takes part in all the right extra-curricular activities. In fact, she seems so perfect she's running unopposed, which offends McAllister's sense of democracy (not to mention the fact he doesn't like her very much). So Jim intervenes and persuades Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run against Tracy. Paul is not terribly bright and is entirely unqualified to be student president, but as a star of the school's football team (before a leg injury sidelined him), he's popular enough to at least give Tracy a run for her money. Just as the race begins to heat up, a spanner is truly thrown into the works when Paul's sister, Tammy (Jessica Campbell) announces she's also running for office. Publicly, Tammy's platform is that the student elections are ultimately pointless and if she's elected, she'll eliminate them altogether. Privately, Tammy is out for revenge against her brother; it seems Tammy is experimenting with her sexuality, and a recent fling with a bisexual classmate named Lisa (Frankie Ingrassia) ended when Lisa dumped her to start going out with Paul.

Nominated for 1 Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay didn't win it. it got Best Feature, Director and Screenplay award at the Indie Spirits along with 2 acting nods.

such a delight to watch this funny movie. i wanted to see it for long, not just for all the Buzz it got but for Payne. he proved he is the master of Comedies or Black Comedies. this maybe my least favorite of his directed flicks but still with a rating or 4.5 stars! wow that is great isn't it?

this is a very funny black comedy on a high school with satirical tones very witty and enjoyable with good writing and memorable characters. when i didn't knew it was directed by Payne, i really wanted to see it for Reese Witherspoon because i heard so much about her performance and the character she portrayed.

its based around a high school where the Elections for student council are taking place with one bright and sharp minded student in the lead, while other participants joins in a very funny way and all the big dramas that are created during it. the 3 way election and satirizes the whole high school scene and politics. Reese Witherspoon was born to play this part of Tracy Flick, she did an awsome job with it. one of the best comedic performances ever. it definitely shaped her career. she is one of the main reason everyone loved it. great. one of my favorite Matthew Broderick part though over all i don't like him. he did his part nice as a high school teacher who lets his emotions gets in his way. i had no sympathy for him towards the him, i wanted to but just couldn't while i felt a bit for Tracy with her overachieving personality that makes her lonely. Chris Klein looks nice and played a very sweet part.

it was written outstandingly well, you will love the screenplay as always Payne is great as a writer too, moreover as a writer. good screenplay that doesn't disappoint at all with no visible flaws to me. direction was good too. i liked the cinematography and art direction too with some very comic score.
i really liked the story and everything that goes on gave me laughs at what happens at high schools.

one of the well made funny high school movies, i wish these type of movies should be made alot they are needed now and are rare. superb fun and entertainment. Do watch it.

Although very under-rated, I would imagine, this film gives many laughs as well as many thoughts to the morals and it's tribulations that we all face. Times when we've wanted to do something and almost did soley one the means we would not get caught! and so the thought comes forth, would you if you knew you'd get caught?
