I must say this film is freaking sweet. Audiences and Critics loved it, their will always be a group that justs hates everything. And those few who find any reason to complain or just get hung up on minor details that are stupid. I realy hop the next 2 sequels are as good. So far I woudl say this is the best Sci Fi filmever made, I never thought the Starwars Trilogy (original ones) would be topped, but Cameron proved me wrong, He more than keeps up with his talent, He is definitly one of the best if not the best director of all time, seriously look at his films they are great.

It won Oscars, Golden Globes so even the critics realised its greatness, it's also the highest grosing film of all time. The only thing people get hung up on is the story is nothing new, However people fail to realise every story has bean done and done again, every movie is a copy of a copy of a copy, think about it Fast and the furios was a copy of Point Break, Superbad was a copy of American pie which was a copy of Fast times at ridgemont high. This film was a masterpice.

Peopel also clammer to Jim cameron cannibalising his prior films, however nobody complained at the Dark Night with the whole you choose who to save and hte other one dies, (harvey or Rachel) which was done in Spider-Man (Mary Jane or bunch of kids) and Batman & Robin (Robin of Dr. Meridian) so if you got issues with that, think again. This movie promised groundbreaking ivsuals, and terrific story telling, and it more than delivers. 5/5

amazing visuals and filming, average to poor acting, bad to brutal writing and storyline...throw piles of money at it and the sheep will follow....how about less money and visuals better story and acting....is this the new wave of amuse them with car chase crash scenes and they won't notice how stupid or poor the accual story is?

The movie Avatar is a really great movie! I left out of the movie theater amazed with all of the visual imaging, and 3D effects. Not to mention, the story is absolutely amazing! If you want to watch a movie with a deep plot of love, caring, and humanity I suggest you watch Avatar.

Ok, so I'll start out by saying Avatar is a great watch if you dont mind sitting for almost 3 hours. I would recommend it to all of my friends. However, I think this movie is a modernized version of the old classic Pokahontas. One might say that they even stole the storyline from Pokahontas.. So I would take away one star for that. Cameron does leave you hanging at the end, just a little bit. Perhaps there will be an Avatar 2?

This movie has all the elements that a well made, thought out film should have. This means it also makes a statement or two about the state of affairs on our planet. The truth is ,this is possible. As a planet we must change now. Greed,selfishness and ignorance are not good excuses, ever.This movie shows what not to do if we ever encounter an alien culture. Avitar also shows what we should do if we find the same.

This movie is one of the best movies of all time with breathtaking special effects and an amazing storyline to it also.

If you watch this movie in 3-D you will be amazed it's a whole new generation of movies and special effects. Even in 2-D you will be amazed how good the movie is.

When I watched this movie for the first time in 3-D at the cinema I was astonished that's why I'm giving it a rating of 10/10

Avatar means "a manifestation of a deity in bodily form on earth." That's basically what this movie is mainly based on. Humans have discovered a foreign planet that contain very precious minerals and Marines are there to maintain peace. Scientists at the compound knows a way for a human to take control of a native's body. The humans use these avatars to make contact with the natives. However as the avatar people make contact with the natives, they sort of connected and saw there ways. This resolves with a fierce battle as the "Colonel" use his greedy senses try to attack the natives. this movie shows the greediness and very interesting to examine the people in the movie. A great movie overall.

"Avatar" is not the next "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings." It might be the next "Matrix," though. Or, perhaps more accurate, the next "Matrix Revolutions." It's technically groundbreaking craftmanship put to work on a story that was played out after "Return of the King." There are a lot of bad guys, a lot of good guys, and sooner or later they're all gonna meet on the battlefield. The little details are not-so-shockingly unimportant, since nothing could stop, change or even, really, comment on the unstoppable trajectory of this film's story.

It's the future. An Evil Corporation is parked on distant planet Pandora, mining the planet of all its precious minerals. The native population, big blue humanoids called the "Na'vi," aren't too happy about this. The corporation has hired scientists to create avatars of Na'vi bodies to be controlled by human brains, in order to communicate to the Na'vi that...they better move, lest be bulldozed by the evil Col. Qautrich (Stephen Lang).

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is flown in to Pandora because his twin brother, who had an Avatar made specifically for him, is dead. The coincidence is an obvious plot device so that we can have a newcomer to Pandora to share in our amazement. Oh, and he's paralyzed, so running around in his new alien body is rather freeing for him.

I don't feel as if I need to continue with the plot description. You know what'll happen. You've seen "Dances with Wolves" and "The Last Samurai." Heck, even "Dead Man." The Na'vi represent nature, the (all-American) corporation represents destructive technology. Quatrich has a Southern accent and says things like, "we have to fight terror with terror." The Na'vi are clones of Native Americans - filtered through the imagination of a white liberal. It's all very obvious.

The question, of course, is whether or not it's entertaining. Well...sometimes. It certainly looks good. Some sequences - especially those with the winged beasts - are eye-popping. Lang makes a fun villain. Pandora is more derivative than original, it reminded me most of Skull Island in Peter Jackson's King Kong. All the monsters have a plastic-y look to them that make them feel too well-done. The 3D is distracting at times and I had a headache before the movie was over.

But there are scenes and individual shots that pop with ethereal beauty. It's worth seeing for that reason, but I don't think it'll be as fun after multiple viewings. The great thing about "Star Wars" was the characters: Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and so on. They embodied the other-worldliness of the story, taking the weight off the effects.

In thirty-two years, I don't think anyone will remember "Jake Sully." 6/10

This film is a revelation of the epitome of outstanding fantasy. James Cameron (The Terminator, Titanic) does it again with his literal out-of-this-world depiction of 2009's must-see phenomenon. The film will have you in shock and awe from beginning to end credits with spectacular C.G.I and special effects from nowhere other than Pandora itself. The film is a passionate action-packed fantasy adventure that will tick all of your boxes. With Avatar 2 (2014) and Avatar 3 (2015) already in production, Avatar is just the beginning of the biggest and best adventure of all time.

I think is one of the best movies of all time. It is one of the movies you can't stop wanting to watch. It shows many morals such as if you desturb the balance of nature it will fight back with all of it's moght. My Opinion "Outstanding".

James Cameron marks his return to the cinematic world with a sci-fi romp as everyday as terminator’s dress sense; leaving a lot to be desired on the conventionalities of the usual sci-fi but more than delivering with spectacular, stupendous graphics. 54 million tickets sold domestically. 202 million sold worldwide and with 667 million dollars box office takings, it is the largest grossing film ever made.

The story begins as any usual sci-fi film. An average man is placed in unusual circumstances on an alien planet. The protagonist, Jake Sully (brilliantly played by Sam Worthington) is then launched into the world of Pandora where the company he has been drafted for, is mining for a substance named Unobtanium (ha ha). However the native populace have a little problem with that. The story then erupts into a charming, if a little dull, tale of how an outsider became part of a community, ending in a fabulous battle; worthy of any nerd’s attention. Unfortunately, what will grab the attention of the nerd even more so is the fact that the Alpha Centauri system which is 35 trillion miles away, would take 24 million years to reach with our current technology, yet strangely the film is set in 2154. But let’s not pick apart the story line, it’s science fiction after all.

The initial bombardment of noise, CGI and astounding panoramas make for a promising start, introducing you to the world of Pandora in spectacular fashion, with the shrewdly devised creatures rendered in magnificent graphics. Unfortunately though, the storyline takes a turn for the worse, with a shallow tale of Jake Sully and Netiri’s blossoming love; accompanied with a scene of the two taking part in what looks like a tasteless inter-racial soft porn video from the 70’s.

Don’t get me wrong, Avatars effects are truly breath-taking (almost as breath-taking as the sum of money required to achieve such a feat) and the revolutionary technology used will undoubtedly be consequential in the film industry. However, the film leaves an impression not of endearment at the story or astonishment at the brilliant characters, but of awe at the graphics and the way in which Cameron portrayed the world of Pandora with plenty of ostentatious panorama shots. In Cameron’s mind this may be a good thing but to me and many others, this film lacks a plotline that is either: a) interesting, or b) rewarding. It is understandable that Cameron cares more about the graphics as, in a recent interview, he stated: ‘I dug out this old script I wrote 17 years ago and thought; this would be perfect for the film’. It’s a strange way to produce a film, placing the effects in higher importance than the story line; surely the most fundamental aspect of any film.

Cameron has always been at the forefront of new technology, with films such as Terminator- you laugh now - and Abyss and it seems he has done it again with Avatar. But is Avatar a game-changer? That is a difficult question to answer. Yes; it revolutionizes the technology use to create computer effects. Yes; it brought 3-D technology to the masses and made it a viable option for future films. And yes; Cameron’s choice to make a film about light, magic, nature and general euphoria was incredibly audacious and makes a nice change from the usual post-apocalyptic sci-fi, softening the boundaries between dystopia and utopia. However is that really enough, does that make it a game-changer? Well, there have been plenty of other movies that redefined the genre and in a far more drastic fashion. Not to mention the fact that new technologies will always be exploited by the industry. Cameron merely used the vast assets at his disposal (thanks to his, I quote: ‘side project’ Titanic) to develop the new technology of ‘Augmented reality’.

The presence of Sigourney Weaver (playing a scientist named Grace Augustine) will have sci-fi fans swarming like a pack of starving wolves to the cinema; frothing mouths and all. The enthralling battle will also draw macho, action lovers from far and wide. The subtle hints to real life issues, namely the war on terror and the Native American massacres of the 1800s, show that this film is not just for the hard-core sci-fi lovers and action junkies, but also for the more intellectual person, who goes to see a film for a more cerebral experience. Big blockbusters have often ignored environmental issues in the past. However this film will appeal to environmentalists as it has a very strong message that nature is powerful, should not be underestimated and deserves our respect. Unusually for a blockbuster, Avatar appeals to a diverse range of people. Perhaps this is what makes Avatar a game-changer.

Think back to those movies that truly changed the movies. The Jazz Singer introducing sound. Gone With the Wind bringing vivid color to the screen. Jurassic Park turning computer-generated images into something akin to real life. Toy Story sending animation on a digital trip beyond infinity.

What those movies had is what Avatar doesn't, although James Cameron's film is certainly a technological marvel on the level of those classics. It lacks the most essential element of any movie, and what the self-proclaimed king of the world will never admit to being his biggest creative flaw:

A story.

A story that doesn't merely proceed but propels, that doesn't just ladle obvious sci-fi metaphors to current events, that urges viewers to not only believe in what's occurring on screen but embrace it. A story worth following to the end, even when the end never seems near enough.

For all of its sensory thrills and gung-ho action, Avatar seldom uses Cameron's dreamscape know-how for anything except fanboy titillation since those are his peeps. This movie is a bored child's detention hall doodle come to near-life. The child has talent but to what worthy end?

Cameron does endlessly dazzle with his day-glo panorama of Pandora, its floating islands, fluorescent rain forests and sheer rocky cliffs digitally painted on the screen, like a Frank Frazetta canvas come to life. We're meant to be awed and entranced by Pandora, to more loudly boo the nasty things Earthlings are plotting to do to it.

In the 22nd century, a Blackwater-style army of mining contractors is raping the distant moon Pandora of a vital resource called unobtainium (oh, please!). A blue-skinned, indigenous species of humanoids called the Na'vi peacefully lives in a wowsah rain forest near the sacred Tree of Wisdom housing their goddess Eywa (mere earthlings call her Mother Nature). They're standing 10 feet tall in the way of human progress.

You see where this is going. Avatar is part Iraq War allegory, part green message flick, with both messages amplified by extraordinary special effects. This will probably be Al Gore's favorite action flick of all time.

Funny that with all of Cameron's visual imagination, the plot settles for reprising Dances With Wolves. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to have his mind melded into a Na'vi body, so he can infiltrate and help destroy the tribe. Jake ends up sympathetic to the peaceful Na'vi, fighting back at his commanders, mainly to impress the lovely Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).

But the plot isn't why Avatar's audience will buy tickets (and by all means pay the extra fee for 3-D). The flora, fauna and critters of Pandora astonish with their variety and vivid colors although simply adding an extra set of legs or wings and a hippie van paint job to quasi-dinosaurs gets tiresome after the first two hours. Avatar loses its pacing with Jake and Neytiri's on-again, off-again romance, regaining momentum for a bombastic climax when Pandora itself rebels against the human intruders.

The Na'vi are amazing creations and Cameron's greatest techie advancement. Basically it's the motion capture animation used in The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol but to the nth degree. The difference is found in the Na'vi's feline eyes, more expressive than any animated gazes before. Saldana is especially effective in that regard.

Yet after all of the stunning sights and sounds, Avatar left me shrugging with admiration and slightly cringing at the final shot's promise of a sequel to come. That's one advantage Cameron didn't have with Titanic, and you can bet he'll milk it.

I was really nervous at first about seeing this movie. I mean, most movies that have been hyped as much as this have turned out to be real stinkers, sadly. Thankfully, Cameron did a REALLY great job on this. I mean, the detail he put into it is Amazing. I read about how it took him 10 years to develop the concept, the characters, the creatures, even the bugs. And truthfully, it really showed.
The story line was pretty basic. Not in a bad way, but it wasn't confusing and anybody could follow it. He said he wanted it to be "relatable" and I think it is. I mean, it hints at a lot of issues that we face today - war, environment, just to name a few.
I also appreciated the female roles in this movie, as in a lot of his movies. They were tough, don't take no bull $hit, and I'm pretty sure a bit more kick a$$ than some of the male characters.

This movie will blow your mind. I truly recommend it for 3-D but its even great in normal viewing. The story attracts you and captivates your attention as Jake tells the story about Pandora.
You can feel the joy and sadness as the story unfolds. You can feel the rage as they destroy Pandora. James Cameron's reputation on making excellent films like the Terminator Movies was really kept up with this movie.
It is one of Mr. Cameron's best movies and it will be an instant classic.
The action is very strong and yet the love remains.

Cameron is the first director to use Motion/Performance Capture Technology properly, no dead eyes, no jerky movements, nothing. You forget you're watching a computer generated character. Meanwhile the other animation, invented surroundings and special effects are seamlessly integrated into the live action. In 20years it may look as fake as bedknobs & Broomsticks, but for right now it's as perfect looking as you could ever imagine. It's a world you've never seen on screen before and it envelops you, AWESOME MOVIE.

Avatar is truly a breathtaking film. James Cameron has exceeded all expectations with this movie. The man who can't make or chooses not to make bad films has raised the bar. I just hope he doesn't cloud his next film with the shadow of Avatar. The 3D experience is a must for all. This a must watch film for all. There is no excuses. Fantastic, all round.

It’s been 12 years since “Titanic” sailed into cinematic history with $1.8 billion in global box office receipts and 11 Oscars in tow. On that fateful night at the Academy Awards, director James Cameron proclaimed himself to be the “King of the World” thanks to his film’s impressive accomplishments. Soon after, he vanished underwater to make a couple of documentaries and left film geeks around the world wondering when he would surface long enough to bring a true narrative to theaters again.

As it turns out, it would seem that we’ve been waiting for one of the most shallow cinematic experiences in recent memory.

A film we’ve been told “will change movies forever” hinging on it’s techonological innovation at the expense of anything resembing an original thought with regards to the story. An effects driven tour de force by a director who is always on the bleeding edge of technology, “Avatar” is a hollow and uninvolving undertaking for the viewer. It wants to envelop us in it’s painstakingly created world of Pandora, but we’re always kept at arm’s distance by the unimaginative story and characters that are painted in such broad strokes that one has to wonder if a child was involved in their creation.

Avatar is James Cameron doing what he does best – blowing things up with awesome special effects, while tying the set pieces together with a story worth telling. The king of the (sci-fi) world is back. Long live the king!It's the breathtakingly beautiful CGI landscape that somehow pulls the audience in on this tale of profit and progress versus nature's power and infinite variety.
