Powerful film. Anger left to fester into bitterness and hate will produce an unhealthy mind capable of committing such atrocities. I can't help but think Ruth used Meg as a substitute for the "other woman" her husband ran off with. The main takeaway for me is not to let the sun go down on your anger.

Watching this movie gave me a range of emotions and I found it difficult to finish as I was becoming increasingly angry. There is a great sadness with movies such as this and as it is based on a true story, this intensifies the pathos felt by the audience. While I wouldn't want to cast judgement on those that took part in this crime I am unable to fathom the reasons why this atrocity took place. A chilling watch that illustrates the dark side of humanity 9/10

It's extremely hard to disturb me but wow, this film was just so sick. plus, being based on a true story you have to think just how truly horrible people can be. However.. It's a really good movie and I highly recommend it to anyone older then 12.

Oh my, what a sad thing. I was not sure if I should watch this, due to to comments. I was expecting alot of gore and blood., but I gave it a try anyway. Although this movie clearly showed how badly she was abused, it did not show everything, leaving alot to the imagination. Even so, it was still very disturbing, to think this really did happen to someone. So sad!

This was pretty good, pretty twisted. The sad part is, it's a true story. It wasn't really true to the actual facts though and considering that I've watched An American Crime, this did not live up to my expectations. But still good and entertaining... in a very disturbing way. For those who ARE interested in this story, watch the movie with Ellen Page called The American Crime, it's based on the torture of Sylvia Likens as well, and is more true to the facts. 4/5!

Very very disturbing movie. It was based on the story of Sylvia Likens. There is a different one called An American Crime. This was an ok movie, but I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone.

I'm a huge fan of movies that push boundaries, are sick, twisted, and disturbing. However, this particular film was had to watch... I think its a great movie to watch!! It was well done, and right up brutal. The fact its based on a true story makes it even that much worse. I recommend it to anybody and everybody, just be warned its a hard film to stomach and not to cry to. 10/10

I watched an american crime today and it was so horrifying that i think it emotionally numbed me. I watched this out of curiosity because everyone was talking about it but i think it pales in comparison to an american crime. Why? first of all the acting was much much better in american crime. also because an american crime is an absolute true story that conveyed the brutality and inhumanity of such a crime without in a sense, totally exploiting the story just for a couple of great torture scenes. The torture she experienced (sylvia) was a reality that had to be dealt with in the movie, but the difference with this movie is that I really feel like some people might get some sick pleasure out of watching it. I know it is based on a book so i should really be critiquing the book and the author who wrote it, but he obviously got the storyline from sylvia's murder and just decided to amplify it so he could make it as exciting as possible. The story of sylvia's death has many different levels and is so much more complex because we are not just dealing with a couple of hotheaded hormonal teenage boys with anger issues - we are witnessing sociological phenomenons like mob mentality and a sort of complex religious brainwashing. I dont know, perhaps it is just me, but somehow i feel guilty for having watched this movie. After watching the american crime i didnt feel guilty - i felt like i learned about sylvia's story and it was in a sense, a tribute to her forgotten story. Anyway, this post is really crappy and i realize that so i will just chalk it up to my emotions. but MY ADVICE - don't watch this movie. Instead, learn something and watch an american crime and then go read about the history of it so you can get all the facts that werent shown in the movie.

There are some comments here that make me SICK ! I am reporting some of these people to this site ! This is a true story that happened to two young innocent children and most SOBs watched it for entertainment or to get a thrill..

The real-life case that this movie exploited is the most disgusting and horrific atrocity committed against a single human being that I have heard of. Sadly though, this movie had no emotional impact on me whatsoever, due to how terrible it is. Everything - the acting, dialogue, direction - was so awful. This wouldn't even be in the 50 most disturbing films I've ever seen, which is sad as the real-life story is so haunting to me.

Holey Cow! Ive seen such cruelty, this movie kept me on the edge. I hope it isn't a true story. I'd do some serious whoop ass on that family

the sad part of this movie is that it all happend in real life! Based on the Jack Ketchum's novel with the same title, which is based on the true story of Sylvia Likens, who was tortured and killed in 1965 in Indiana.

That's very harsh. You know people like her had something that caused them to flip. As for the kids, they were being brainwashed. Maybe her mother was abusive to her. As harsh as it was, you cannot judge people until you walk in their shoes.

I actually saw a TV show on the true story, so it made it very tough to watch knowing it was a true story. This is very disturbing. I almost cried because it was very hard to watch a teenage girl get tortured like that.

I saw this movie a few months ago with my friends and freaked out during the entire thing! It wasn't scary as much as it was twisted and gory. If your into some really twisted movies then this is the movie for you. The acting was great and the plot was...well, it was interesting. I give a 4/5...worth the watch.

You know, based on the actual reports from the court case surrounding Sylvia's death, An American Crime doesn't portray Gertrude as violent enough. Sick people exist, this stuff happens even today to children. Don't be mad at Ketchum for bringing to light the horrors that go on behind closed doors. Instead work twice as hard in your life to make it so that abuse such as this will finally be eradicated.
