Wisconsin Death Trip: Wisconsin Death Trip is an intimate, shocking and sometimes hilarious account of the disasters that befell one small town in Wisconsin during the final decade of the 19th century. The film is inspired by Michael Lesy's book of the same name which was first published in 1973. Lesy discovered a striking archive of black and white photographs in the town of Black River Falls dating from the 1890s and married a selection of these images to extracts from the town's newspaper from the same decade. The effect was surprising and disturbing. The town of Black River Falls seems gripped by some peculiar malaise and the weekly news is dominated by bizarre tales of madness, eccentricity and violence amongst the local population. Suicide and murder are commonplace. People in the town are haunted by ghosts, possessed by devils and terrorized by teenage outlaws and arsonists. Like the book, the film is constructed entirely from authentic news reports from the Black River Falls' newspaper with occasional excerpts from the records of the nearby Mendota Asylum for the Insane. The film also makes use of the haunting black and white photographs taken by the resident portrait photographer of Black River Falls at the end of the 19th century. Contemporary color documentary footage of the town today is also included at the end of each section of the film that take place over the course of four seasons. |

What a strange documentary. From the description, I presumed it would be more interesting than it actually was, since I'm fascinated in the subject of criminology. Oh well, I suppose I better get the book. I wouldn't recommend the film, since if leaves you wanting to now more about the characters and the crimes described. 3/5

This is a VERY odd film. Simply a steady stream of vintage black & white photographs and a monologue of various deaths, suicides, and crimes. Haunting and kinda disturbing....I really liked it. The Veehd plugin isn't that bad and it doesn't eat much memory. Let the movie buffer awhile before you try to watch it.

Based on the book of the same name (The book is REALLY WEIRD) I really enjoyed this and found it very interesting, dark and unique and a morbidly fascinating treat! also: *Veehd works just fine for me..let it "buffer" : hit play then pause..Or hit play then stop...wait for the film to buffer and it should be fine Veehd requires a "plug in" unless you have an account..It's free to make an account, and then , just sign IN, and you'll never be asked to d.load any plug ins ever again.

No real storyline. More of an account of events that plaqued an area of wisconsin more than a century ago. I enjoy history, especially late 1800's American history. Not a bad watch.

Wisconsin Death Trip on veehd.com is the only one that has the correct movie. It is a really good movie. Really kind of creepy. I live in Wisconsin not to terribly far from this area, so I was very familiar with some of the towns they talked about and found this movie rather interesting. Good one time watch! 3/5 :) :) :) Thanks SuzyQ!!

I didn't think it was creepy. A doc about how things don't change much? I think America's first depression was around the turn of the century as well which explains the part about the extreme poverty. I grew up in a small town and this just seems kinda normal. interesting concept though.

I've vacationed in Black River Falls many times. It's funny how places don't look the same as in the movie. For example. The movie Bird on a Wire, was filmed in my Wisconsin hometown. I never knew, and still don't know, that we have a Chinatown, but Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn found it 2.5 - 5 stars.
