I just love this movie. I read the book after I saw this film & for the first time the movie is much much better than the original. Polansky gives it a touch, a specific & unique touch like in all his movies. Bravo to the script writers, actors, production... A classic. 10/10

interesting story...occult, supernatural without diving deep in the subject...this subjects had, has and will intrigue humanity...the question is can we mere humans really handle such power? they did a great job on depp...his appearance and looks match the character...he is simply fascinated by the adventure and the viewer follows him blindly...the locations are definetely great...the tower at the end is significant... unanswered questions and speculations until the end...having said that does that leaves the viewer hungry or unsatified...that would be at the discretion of each of everyone...roman polanksi would say he did his part...what about you? have you? what do you think?

This film is unmatched. The characters are superbly developed and played; what an amazing cast. The finesse with which this movie was made is almost tactile. Depp's part gave Corso a confident air, and that made a world of difference to the final cut. Wonderful sets and locations, even though it wasn't actually shot in Portugal, the landscape is breathtaking. Sets also happen to be breathtaking because every 5min Corso is lighting up a cigarette; that drove me insane, but it was common at the time. I don't know, but that mysterious woman just drove me up the walls, found her to be quite the seductress. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery movie, with a pour of occult and supernatural.

This one is weird. Something is missing in this film few explanation maybe. But I guess Polanksi was thinking that we can assume some details. Still I enjoyed it 3/5

Roman Polanski's movies aren't about shooting and destruction like so many other movies these days, his movies are about people and their remarkable adventures. The Ninth Gate is supposed to be a thriller or horror movie but it is neither. The Ninth Gate is an occult movie and that is a whole different ballpark. Most occult movies range in quality from dull to laughable but this is a rare exception and well worth your time. This underrated, dark piece of cinema is actually my favorite Polanski film.

what an intriguing movie, really want to get my hands on a copy of the dumas club. I have to admit this kept me interested throughout with the mystery of the girl and of Depp's character (if you know what I mean). absolutely amazing.

The Ninth Gate has a great concept, however the film does leave a bit disappointed by the films conclusion. Still a good watch.

As @cocotronic states below, this movie is based on a book called "The Club Dumas" by Arturo Perez-Reverte. The book is multi-leveled and intricately drawn and shares with this film only the base skeleton in plot. That said, however, it's a firm skeleton and while the movie becomes its own entity, nearly separate from the book, it does not disappoint. Polanski is not a favorite of mine, but this is the sort of film he does very well and "The Ninth Gate" is exceptional. The casting and characterization are superb, and the location and set shots are breathtaking in their accuracy to what one is given to imagine in the book. This film and its book explore that blurred, shifting area, the no man's land, between good and evil where at one moment one is in the 'good' and then one is not, having no idea just how it happened or even if one is now 'evil'. Depp's character, Corso, is fully aware he walks a fine line at best between the two, and knows he crosses over. He knows himself. Right up until he doesn't. In the end, in both the book and the film, we are left - deliciously - wondering. About what, I'll leave to you to explore.
