First... let me say, that I am a fan of the whole original series, although, I always new it could be so much more, once the graphics were possible. Deep down though, I thought that it would wind up a BIG disappointment... just like all the other movies , which... over the years, I've hoped (in vain) would be great. But I'd like to say, aside from thinking that their could have been a little more character/emotional development , this is my new ALL TIME, FAVORITE MOVIE! Oh my FRAKKIN' God... was that great! Hands down 5/5!

Outstanding, A must watch film, From start to finish the film has you glued to it, The effects are great and its a real good insight into how the planet of the apes films starts I wonder are they going to include mars into it in the next as there was just a hint of that in a maned flight in a news reel in the film, the mind bogles.. 10/10

Walking into this movie I was not expecting much more than yet another spin on the Planet of the Apes series. I was drawn into one of the best movies I have seen! The special effects were hardly noticeable, a seamless transition with real-life. The story was believable, well-written and directed!

The most impressive part was the acting job by Andy Serkis (played Gollum from Lord of the Rings). He played the part of Cesar. All of the scenes were done by motion animation. This actor truly sold the part ad brought a level of intensity to the chimp that only animating it would never had done! To think that all of his parts were shot on a green screen without looking at other apes was mind blowing.

I am an animal rights activist that feels strongly about the mistreatment of animals or even the portrayal of this horrible act. This movie depicted just enough violence to get the point across that they were mistreated and also to drive home the reason these animals wanted so badly to get out and be free. Was pleased with the message delivered!

Highly recommend this film to everyone!

Brilliant! The best Movie of the Summer.James Franco's best preformance to date.The plot was easy to follow and the story line was not rushed.If the next film is as good as this one,This will be the best franchise in over ten years.My rating is 5/5.

I watched Planet of the Apes and really thought that was a good movie and really felt ths movie did it great justice! I loved watching this film, loved the acting, the characters and especially loved watching Casear character in the movie unfold!

I loved everything about this movie and would recommend it to anyone! Awesome movie and definitely a must see film!

Visually this is a brilliant film. The cinematography and special effects are amazing. For that alone it's a must-see movie. That doesn't alter the fact that there are some major plot holes and some really questionable turning points in the plot and unexplained changes of heart in some of the characters. But don't let that stop you enjoying it. Even if you didn't like any of the previous "Planet of the Apes" movies, this one is different: you'll probably like it

I thought the CG for the most part looked very realistic and I appreciated (as someone with just a little bit of background in primatology) that they for the most part did their homework about the different primates in the film, making it really realistic and interesting. I liked this as a creation story, turning the traditional "planet of the apes"
canon on its head through redirecting the responsibility to humans and the way we treat other intelligent beings as if they are less worthy of life and happiness than us. I liked that the protagonist had an indian-american girlfriend who had a much stronger moral center than he did. I also liked the name of the main chimp - Caeser - brought me back not just to Julius but also the classic movie/icon Black Caesar. In some ways, both movies have to do with overcoming oppression and reclaiming agency.

However, the film suffers from some mediocre acting from most of the actors. Its watchable, and intellectually interesting, but not quite as entertaining as it could be.

This was a great introduction for those too young to remember the original movies and has breathed new life into the story for those of us that can,i just hope that the inevitable sequels are equally as good and do justice to the original classic movies, I'd give this 8/10 stars.

After the long procession of Superhero films and sequels, Scifi fans can finally take a breather in this prequel. It all starts out on familiar footing, a scientist (Franco), looking for a way to cure his father's (Lithgow) brain disease, begins experimenting a new drug on apes, with consequences no one could have seen coming.

It has been a very, very long time since a prequel came out that was worth seeing, and an even longer time where said prequel could stand on its own footing. Rise of the Planet of the Apes does both of these, not depending on whether or not you saw the previous Planet of the Apes films, but instead gives brief references to them and meanwhile focuses on telling a great scifi story. The actors are on top-form, especially Lithgow who almost steals the show as Franco's father who suffers from Alzheimer's. The CGI is well done, and the script is refreshingly original. In short, this is one film, if you are a scifi nut like me, that you have to see.

I personally am not too much of a fan. The ending left me hanging which makes me think they might make a rise of the Apes 2. The ending didnt show thoroughly at all what the humans did after they escaped because it would probably make sense they would still go out and hunt them because it destroyed and killed some humans and a helicopter. IT was SOMEWHAT realistic but parts made me say "oh cmon". They woulda had the army there or national guard. They would of took more pre cautions in a lab for testing apes. Would they really keep testing a monkey and rush thru with a test sample like they did. There's many reasons why I did not like but it wasn't a total waste of time.

Good movie. I liked the name the picked out for the main character. He was truly a leader and extremely smart. Just when I thought the story was going to be predictable, it had a few twists and turns. I foresee a part 2 for this movie. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it an 8.

At first I was worried about the amount of CG as well as James Franco being cast in this movie because of the roles he usually does. I was hesitant to watch this movie. Boy am I glad I did! This film was fantastic! I was spellbound the entire time. I found myself caring greatly for the main character and did not I expect to love it as much as I do. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

this film is really great could watch it again and again i would say its better than an the original but other people may differ. Its premise is similar to the fourth film in the original series. It is intended to act as a foundation with its own origin story for a new film series

This movie is so fantastic. Very believable story line and they did an amazing job making the apes as realistic as they did, not only in looks but in characteristics too. This movie totally made my brain battle my heart. All logic goes out the window in the face of "science", and instead your emotions lead the way. A def recomindation to anyone who hasnt watched it yet. :)

I really enjoyed watching this movie. It wasn't at all like i expected it to be and had some humour in the mix also.

The story line makes sense and makes you believe something like that could actually happen. I never really got into any of the original planet of the apes movies but this has made me want to go back and watch them.

What is Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes? Is it a remake? A reboot? A prequel? Or just another symptom of Hollywood's crippling lack of originality?

In truth, it's probably a little bit of all of them. Crucially, however, the film also happens to be one of the more accomplished, albeit slightly cynical blockbusters to land in multiplexes this summer.

Avoiding the mistakes of Tim Burton's, frankly, appalling 2001 remake, this time 20th Century Fox has chosen a decidedly different approach to the property. Cherry-picking elements from the 1968 original Apes flick and splicing them with tropes taken from the subsequent sequels, this new film manages to cleverly set itself up as prequel, remake and reboot, all at the same time.

That said, none of this fancy franchise repositioning would matter a jot if the rationale underpinning the film weren't rock solid. Luckily for Fox, it's in this area that Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is at its strongest.

Rooting the film in the very real and emotive world of gene therapy, big pharmaceutical companies and animal testing gives the film potency, relevance and credibility, something lacking in most modern sci-fi pictures. If anything, these choices pushes the franchise into a slightly more George Romero-esque vein than the more epic scale of the original films.

However, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is most definitely not a Romero film and director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), along with editors Conrad Buff and Mark Goldblatt, cut it with a pace, efficiency and confidence that owes more to modern action movies than anything else. For the most part, this approach works, but there are occasions where the film would benefit from prioritizing character over rushing to the next plot point.

Certainly, in this cut of the film, while James Franco is perfectly serviceable as scientist, Will Rodman, his character is never anything other than perfunctory. Franco judges the tone of the material well and hits all the notes you'd expect, but you never fully invest in his character, because, well, there isn't much to engage with.

More effective, though given far less screen time, is John Lithgow as Rodman's Alzheimer's-stricken father. Despite his relatively small role, it's Lithgow, more than any other performer, who helps sell the interaction between man and ape in some genuinely subtle and tender moments.

Faring less well are David Oyelowo, as evil corporate head Jacobs, and Brian Cox as Landon, owner of a less than idyllic primate 'sanctuary'. Their villainous roles are distinctly two-dimensional, although the actors are good enough (especially Cox) to at least imbue their scenes with some spark.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for either Tom Felton, as Landon's ape-abusing son, Dodge, and Freida Pinto, who plays Rodman's girlfriend, Caroline. Both are given very little to work with, but whereas Pinto seemingly disappears into the background, Felton decides to gives a rather more theatrical performance. While this might suit life at Hogwarts, here it just seems out of place.

However, when all's said and done, no one comes to see a Planet Of The Apes movie for the quality of the human drama on show, so it falls to the real stars of the show, the genetically enhanced simians and their human-raised leader, Caesar, to deliver the goods. Thankfully, they do.

Magnificently performed by mo-cap king, Andy Serkis, Caesar and his kind are brought to life phenomenally by the team at WETA Digital, and occupy the screen in a far more vivid and substantial way than any of the human characters. Unfortunately, despite the quality of Serkis' performance, some of the CG work is of variable quality and there's definitely some stretching of credibility in terms of the apes' movements and abilities in the final act.

But it's that final act, heralded by the delivery of two key lines from earlier installments of the franchise, that lifts Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes out of the ‘merely okay' and into the ‘actually quite good' category.

Watching the apes finally giving humanity a severe bloody nose is wonderfully cathartic, while the final battle is both a well-executed set piece and an appropriate payoff to the groundwork laid earlier in the film.

In the final analysis, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is a brisk, effective and ultimately enjoyable B-movie, which honours the films that spawned it, while taking the series into some interesting, and potentially quite fertile new areas.

Ending on a tease for a potential sequel, it would seem that Fox is banking on this franchise becoming a regular fixture on the blockbuster calendar. On the evidence of this installment, it has every reason to be optimistic.
