Based on Wes Craven's landmark 1972 exploitation flick of the same name, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a brutal movie that exposes the darkest recesses of human depravity. The simple plot follows four criminals on the lam who encounter a pair of nubile female teens in a small mountain town. After murdering one and brutally raping the other and leaving her for dead, the cons seek refuge at a nearby summer house. The twist is that it's the very home inhabited by the parents of one of the victims. Upon learning that their house guests raped and tortured their 17-year-old daughter, the couple exact a revenge that arguably exceeds the excesses of the sociopathic gang. When originally released in 1972, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was a shock to the system. Never before had a film shown such images of human wickedness. Grainy and low budget, the original film played like a maniacal cackle from the seedy underbelly of an America nursing a brutal post-Aquarian hangover. Things play out a little differently, though, in 2009. For starters, the movie actually looks quite beautiful, and the story’s idyllic mountain setting is milked for all it's worth. The performances are noteworthy as well, with Garret Dillahunt more than convincing as Krug, the gang's swaggering leader; and Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn portraying the distressed parents with an effective mix of panic, courage, and blind instinct. In an age marked by both increasingly ghastly films and a public discourse that actually debates the merits of institutional torture, a film like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT really shouldn’t shock anyone. But in both the original and the remake, there’s a latent nihilism that permeates the world. The idea of a sense of lawlessness that cannot be understood or prevented, but only reacted against, is truly disquieting and makes this story unique in the annals of horror.

I have been waiting to see this film for a while, just never got around to it before now. Why not a film for the squeamish the Last House on the Left does deliver the blood parts with a strong moral core that feels very authentic throughout the chaos.

Of course that authentic moral core which brought about the death of the bad guys was used in combination with the kitchen sink, a hammer, a wine bottle, a pistol and that wonderful cooking machine known as the microwave but its still a factor none the less.

If you liked the original film, or enjoy the other works of Wes Craven, then this film is right up your alley. Should you wish to avoid a very dark subject matter with scenes of violence depicted throughout then I suggest you skip this one all together as there won't be any middle ground where you can fast forward through the gruesome events and still watch the rest of the film without a problem.

A well deserved 4/5 for this classic remake.

Ok in my opinion this film was ver very good.From the start of the film till the end i was glued to my screen, great story with very very good acting in my opinion, The rape scene did make me feel sick ( real good acting on the part of this girl) but i am trying to remember that is not real. Overall i think this film was very good

I didn't want to see this at first because the whole 'remake-thing'. Why does Hollywood have to 'remake' this? But the film was actually pretty good! I liked the psychological aspect of it- the 'vengeance is mine' attitude of the parents when they realize their daughter's rapists are sleeping in their house, so to speak. But there just weren't enough killings in this or blood for it to really be horror. I mean, if SAW is your favorite kind of horror then you will 'not' like this at all.

OK!!! .. This is one of my favorite horror movies. Good storyline, very realistic and very disturbing. I wouldn't recommend anyone watching this if they were under 18 but to anyone who is over the age. Very suspenseful, keeps you guessing the whole way through the movie and has a really good ending. A little blood but its more of a thriller then a horror movie. This movie is shocking with what happens to those poor girls. 5/5

All I have to say is AMAZING MOVIE. The acting was great. It was also very emotional and sad, something the original didn't really have. It wasn't to slow like some movies are in the biginning. And it had a great ending! The part of Sadie played by Riki Lindhome was amazing, it was just so heartbraking. And of course Sara Paxton did an amazing job portraying a rape victim. It all just seemed so real, like you could had been in the movie. Both the parents I had never seen before in anything else but they also did an amazing job. Great movie.

Let's face it, there are a lot of remakes, there are some good one's: The Thing, The Hills have Eyes, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There are some average one's: House of Wax, House on Haunted Hill, and War of the Worlds. Then there are the bad one's: Halloween, The Fog, and Psycho. Last House on the Left, my parents had absolutely held me from the original movie, but when I became an adult I rented the movie and watched it by myself, I was just so curious what they were trying to hold me back from, I wasn't really shocked with the movie, I could see how it was gritty and brutal in the day, but after seeing movies like I spit on your grave, Hostel, Dirty Harry, Casino, etc, it just didn't really effect me. So I was actually looking forward to a remake of this just to see what they would do with the story and I have to say that they not only made it better, it was just a very great horror film that made me want to take 15 showers afterwards.

Mari and her family are going on vacation. When they arrive at the house, Mari asks to sleep in the guest house instead of in the main house. Mari's brother, Ben, had died one year earlier, and the family are still trying to adjust to his absence. She finds a necklace he gave her and puts it on. She decides to ride into town to see her friend Paige. Mari's mother, Emma, is cautious, but her father, John, lets her go. Mari meets up with Paige at the store where Paige is employed. A young kid named Justin approaches the counter and asks for a pack of cigarettes, which Paige does not give to him due to his age. Justin says that if they join him at his motel room, he will give them marijuana. Paige agrees and sells him the cigarettes. They drive to Justin's motel room and Justin and Paige enter. Mari waits in the car but notices they are taking too long. She enters the room where she finds Justin and Paige on the bed getting high. She joins them and they decide to give Justin a makeover. They are interrupted by Krug, Sadie, and Francis. Krug explains that it is too risky to let Paige and Mari live. They decide to not only murder but rape the young girls. The gang goes to Mari's house not knowing that's where she's staying with her parents, her parents welcome the gang in thinking they got into a car accident. But Mari somehow survives and comes back home; her parents discover that the people they've been helping are the same people that just tried to murder their daughter and now it's time for justice.

This is the movie that you cannot wait to see justice brought to these sleazebags, they were so disgusting, I was just screaming and cheering in the theater. Like the tag line said, if bad people hurt someone you love, how far would you go to hurt them back? If that was my daughter, you wouldn't wanna know the sick things I would've done to these slimy people. The thing that made this movie so horrific was how realistic it was. The rape scene doesn't show much but is one of the most graphic and disturbing in cinema, even my 25 year old boyfriend had to cover his eyes, he said he was just incredibly sick from it because he can't imagine the pain she was going through. The performances are on and the story is great. I would say this is one of the best remakes in years, this is not for the faint of heart though, but if you're curious about the remake, trust me, this was a very respectful movie of the original horror story of murder and revenge.

This was a really good movie, great storyline, perfect acting, totally unpredictable, unique and original. The movie was twisted and gory, which we like to see I suppose. Definitely worth watching, I recommend 14+ because some parts of the movie are a bit inappropriate. 9/10 stars for this movie, you will enjoy it.

The infamous unsettling scene that this film is known for is far from stupid. In today's time so many of us have seen so many rape scenes that we don't give it a second thought or as quickly as it comes it goes. I believe several of you are so offended by this scene more than any other films is because this one actually brought back to the forefront what rape is; a major act of grossly offensive physical behavior, disturbingly honest, grotesque, atrocious and repulsive, which is rape. That scene didn't give us the luxury of being relived the "angst" to "bare" rape in only 35-60 seconds as do most films. That scene drug us in and made us experience if only for a moment the validity of what she went through or anyone in real life for that matter. The realism of the savage man was all too three dimensional for our minds to tolerate. This film if no other informed plenty that such a violation isn't just some "thing". I felt as though we stood there right along with those psychos (possibly any ol' person) and bared witness to one of the most demoralizing acts practiced by our own species. We could do nothing to stop it just as she could do nothing to stop it. This film chose not to smooth the rough edges of such a travesty. We forgot that it was just make-believe and for that we are offended. As for anyone who claims that this film glorifies sexual assault against women, well that's to be debated. I've not heard such backlash for the other 1,000,000's of movies that actually glam up assault or the vast amount of movies that were blatantly made with fetish porn in mind that more than dabble in the realm of sicko "erotic" fantasy. This remake is superior to the original; The parents devastation when having discovered the state of their daughter was by far -some- of the most convincing down-to-earth reaction that I've ever seen and felt while viewing such a film. I could rate this film a 10/10 based solely on the acting alone. Weaponry ideal and realistic. Plot of course believable, heck these things have occurred all our lifetime and "The Last House on the Left" delivers 100% on screen with an actual script to back it up. The biggest tip I could suggest to anyone curious whether to watch this film or not would be to either fast forward or look away between 39 to 42 minutes. Hopefully for some avoiding such a scene all together will enable you to possibly find this movie thrilling, dramatic and entertaining because it is a horror in itself.-Stolee
