After the TV series Firefly was prematurely canceled, Joss Whedon (creator/writer/director) attempted to wrap things up with a movie. Commanded by Malcom Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), the most memorable captain since James T. Kirk, Serenity is a smuggling ship sneaking contraband goods throughout the galaxy. This movie is not a typical flick set in outer space. That factor helps make the film and future believable as it presents a mixed culture through recycled props, settings, costuming and language with no crazy looking alien life forms. The captain and crew are forced to survive after a great war that found Captain Mal on the losing side. Humorous and thrilling adventures are packaged with surprisingly endearing characters making both Firefly and Serenity a cult classic. Shiny.

Based on the Tv series Firefly by Joss Whedon. After the tv series was abruptly and prematurly cancelled by Fox it won many sci fi awards and there was a great back lash against Fox for the cancellation. Whedon was able to get Fox to release the movie rights to Universal because there was so much more to tell in this story. Because of Whedons passion for the story as well as the original cast members love of firefly, he was able to get all of the original cast to sign on for Serenity. Basically following the series Joss fast tracked some of the plot ideas although Serenity was never suppose to be the ending or final chapter ( cast members had signed on for studio options for 2 additional sequels). Unfortunatly Universal must have thought that it would just sell due to the high loyal following of the tv show because they never really promoted the movie and it still broke even at the box office with production costs at just under 39 million and showed a profit after video and dvd sales. Universal choose not to make another despite its glowing reviews,loyal following begging for another...it is a fantastic original series and movie well done with great future storylines..a great sci fi epic
