For a creepy ghost story it's a must see. As long as we all understand that the "true" part of the story ain't necessarily so. For the true story I recommend the documentary The Real Amityville Horror. Despite some tangential material, the show is fast paced and keeps basically to the story. The Defeo family are murdered and the oldest son is convicted for the crime. A year later the Lutz' family move in. The Lutz's are a blended family consisting of newlyweds and the wife's three children from another marriage. They move out 28 days later very different. The ordeal that the Lutz' suffered was pervasive poltergeist with a demonic entity so powerful that sent the Priest fleeing from the Rite of Exorcism. The film depicts George as possessed by the demon. I honestly think that what happened to George Lutz was worse as described in the documentary, than what happened in this film. Also, I can see why he was so upset by his characterization and sued the producers of this film. That aside, those who are curious of the supernatural, and stories of good and evil will be happy with this film. The FX's are good and the gory parts are brief and not sensationalized. Some of the best supernatural films are ones where there is a modicum of truth, a factual historical aspect and a strong person or group that is able to love and forgive while fighting an emmense evil that holds all the cards but one. 4/5

It was... alright. We all know the Amityville Horror story and I think this played up to it's name alright. You may get blindsided by Ryan Reynolds abs, but I think that was the point. Besides that, it wasn't THAT scary but it's worth a watch. (rental)

A very old school story to which everyone is familiar with, which gives it more depth and pull! The fact it's loosely based on a true story is what probably pries most towards the viewing but I think what keeps people interested is the fact, we don't know!

The story line of this movie os a little bit well known but the way they show ans and the actor's performance makes it different from all the others. It is really scary and not predictable at all. The Amityville Horror is a movie that will keep our attention from scene 1.
