While I have not seen the 1932 Universal original production starring Boris Karlof I did, however enjoy and revel in this 1999 Stephen Sommers re-imaging of the classic horror machine. While having a unique story for it's time and amazing special effects "The Mummy" is much more, it's an extremely well thought out film and a highly entertaining Adventure epic that is right up there with Indiana Jones.





Stephen Sommers "The Mummy" is smart, fast paced, hilarious at times, touching at others and powerful in it's sweeping and dynamic story and atmosphere. But this film really benefits from it's strong lead performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz who help elevate this film from average to great and really up the appeal and power of this film. But the real draw comes from the adventure and the excitement that is released in small capsules that in certain areas burst open and blow you away. But all in all this film is wild and crazy fun that is more well made than it should, and allot better acted and scripted than it should but you get what you want and more and in the end you won't be disappointed.




Brendan Fraser rocks as the tough but kind heartened adventurer Rick O'Connell, his performance is key to keeping this film afloat and believable if someone else was cast I don't think it would have worked out as well seeing as the humor infused with the terror and thrills and Fraser is the only one who I can see pulling this off to the point that you don't see the actor but the character he plays. Rachel Weisz is amazing as the smart and beautiful Evelyn Carnahan she really brings the charm, the heart and the style., she is also a great focal point in this film and helps bring a human zing quality to the picture. But all in all the cast does amazing in this film and under the direction of Stephen Sommers they succeed.




"The Mummy" is what you call outrageously entertaining and majorly exciting, it's one of those films that just captures you from the very beginning and won't let you go til the credits roll. "The Mummy" is high octane thrills mixed with old schooled horror and amazingly timed humor helps create one of the best re-imaginings of all time and one of the greatest adventure films since "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Arnold Vosloo and the special effects imject just the right amount of horror as the mummy, but it is the witty banter between the characters played by Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser that put this movie over the top and into greatness. The supporting characters are in turns amusing and exasperating and the storyline holds one's interest from beginning to end. A great movie!

Certainly this Universal remake is more in the vain of Indiana Jones rather than the original Mummy. It is high on adventure and comedy, and wins because of it. The sets, scenery, special effects are all first-rate. The film is fast-paced from beginning to end and is very suspenseful. Stephen Sommers again shows his talent as a director for creating action-packed adventure with a high level of comedic overtones. The cast are all very good in their roles, yet none of them seem really to be taking themselves or the film too serious. Brendan Fraser is an affable hero, and Rachel Weisz makes a good heroine. Good support comes from John Hannah, Kevin J. O'Connor, and the mummy, Arnold Vosloo. Also a real treat was seeing Bernard Fox in a small role as an aging British pilot. Don't expect the old mummy of lore in this one, but sit down and have one heck of a ride...a rollercoaster of hijinks in the sands of Egypt.

I love this film it is awesome.I have seen it tons of times and still watch it over and over,without managing to get bored of it.I would highly recommend it and it is a must see film. Anybody that likes fantasy action horror will love this film.

Brendan Fraser may well have established himself as the John Wayne of his day with his thrilling performance here.No one can take the place of the Duke of course,but Fraser approached his character with just the right amount of swagger,wit,and charm.This take on an often told story has all the charm of the old Saturday matinee's of years gone by,and all the thrills of the Raiders of the Lost Ark series.Excellent casting,with standout performances from everyone, particularly Arnold Vosloo,Fraser,and Oded Fehr.Highly recommended.
