I love how this movie illuminates the personal relationships behind political maneuvers. Unlike so many similar films, the characters here are allowed to make genuine mistakes...like the rest of us :) A lot of great performances--too many to list. Watch it!

It is a forceful and wonderful film that follows four generations of a Jewish Hungarian family through seventy tumultuous years of Hungarian history. The story is extremely well done with rich finely etched characters. It is undoubtedly the best historical portrait of Europe from the late 19th-mid 20th century. It does an excellent job of showing the emotions and realities of the progressions of Europe during this time. Since it is in Hungary, we are exposed to monarchy, fascism, and communism, all of which are portrayed vividly.

A good film, well made. Think tried to fit too much into the film and lost something in doing so.

Engrossing!! Cant believe the fit so much into this movie!! def worth a watch, its a concentrator tho, be warned. I liked it!!

To paraphrase: Politicians lie to the people. But worse, the people lie to politicians and tell them that they believe them. So much in this film that could be of use to so many today.

I grew up in Hungary and I am part Jewish.There was some hatred against Jews but it wasn't as extreme as it shows it in this movie.My great Grand father(Whose Mother was 100% Jewish)was an Officer in the Austro-Hungarian Light Hussar Brigade in WW.1.and there was no problem him being Jewish.World W 2 was different the Germans were occupying Hungary and they were deporting the Jews but the top richest people were still Jewish and they were in control both Germany and Hungary only the poor and middle class Jews were taken to the camps!!!
