This is a classic that almost bankrupted Selznick International, bailed out by MGM for 15% of the gross! The arrangement to release through MGM meant delaying the start of production until Selznick International completed its contract with United Artists and Gable became available. Most of the key cinematic and costly scenes were shot without the main character "Scarlett O'Hara", as Hollywood, the public, and David 0.'Selznick were torn over who should play the leading role in the Best selling Novel to that date! The burning of Atlanta scene is where David O. Selznick's brother Myron, also Lawrence Olivier's Agent chose to introduce Vivien Leigh to David, and since her lineage was the same as Scarlett's character (French & Irish), that gave the role to her instead of Paulette Goddard because of controversy over her marriage with Charley Chaplain. This film totally captures in film a snap shot of the 1800's pre and post Civil War period! Selznick was a perfectionist and would not allow a single piece of furniture, Architecture or clothing in ANY scene that wasn't authentic. If you are not into the history of the time, or easily bored there is no way you would appreciate this Movie. If you are a connoisseur of American Classics, few rival this epic! 10 Academy Awards, and the highest grossing movie from 1938 to 1966, GWTW is in my personal opinion one of the greatest movies ever made. I've seen it many, many times, but the first time was in 1968 with the then new 3 screen 180 degree round screens, with quadraphonic stereo. I had previously never had such and audio and video experience in my life! Not until 10 years later in viewing the original Star Wars with Lucas Sound and amazing never before infinity scene space shots was I equally blown away. If you are young, old, or in between and want to take a four hour trip through time, this one's for you! David O Selznick "NAILED" this epic book by Margaret Mitchell and went down in history. The Musical Scores throughout the film are unforgettable and haunting as only Max Steiner could do. Given the technology of the time (1938), few movies could ever rival it.Though Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor did give it a close shot. 100/100 my highest rating!

I re-watched this movie but I still didn't like it very much.I have mixed feeling about this movie.Decent acting, great production, wonderful colors, great direction, beautiful scenery and great costumes but the plot was not very great in my opinion. The main problem that I have with this movie is that it was way too long even though it wasn't necessary. The movie should have been about 2 hours shorter.I don't like the fact that this movie glorifies the South and makes them look like innocent victims.I am not saying that the South has not suffered in the Civil War but it is hard to have pity with people that have started a war just because they didn't want to abolish slavery.Scarlet's terrible personality made it hard for me to enjoy the movie. She is selfish, greedy, spoiled, obsessed with her appearance and obsessed with a man(Ashley)that will never love her.Melanie is her best friend but she tries too take her husband(Ashley). She makes a fool out of Rhett even though he has saved her many times and actually does love her.I seriously don't understand why this movie is celebrated as one the greatest romances of all times.4/10

I am sure that this film was awesome... the weekend that it got released :) I watched it years ago along with other classics that don't do a damn thing for me. YET, Dial M for Murder, the film REBECCA - The Hitchcock stuff was great and still stands up quite well today. I recently watched The Bounty with Mel Gibson and loved it too. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your well written comment. Gone With the Wind... Gone with the Times :) CHEERS FROM CANCUN MEXICO!!!!

I see all the hoopla, but I can't agree with the norm here. I hate this movie with a passion, and I in line it with the Red Badge of Courage, both dreadful. It is pain-stakenly frustrating to not want to stab scarlet, because Scarlet seems completely tstl. Equally, the connotations and backdrops are irksome, a reminder to many people of a Great Speckled past America holds, and the degradation of an entire race. And before anyone says it, I am not African-American ( which it wouldn't matter if I was), nor an Xenocentric. Don't get me wrong, I love movies set in the 18 & 19th century, I teach British & American History/ Art History college level, and I especially love British films of this time period. Nevertheless, but I could never understand why this movie gets so many accolades. If I were to give out any, it would be for the cinematography only. Sorry, just mo...and everyone knows what those are worth :)

All I have to say about this movie is WOW! This movie is my all time favorite classic movie. I have seen it over 50 times and it is one of those that I could watch again and never get bored with it. My favorite quote from the movies is from Rhett when he says, "frankly my dear I don't give a damn." it is an awesome movie and I would alwayas recommend this movie.
