A civil war between the French settlement and the Algerian natives who rightfully live there and want their independence. Public bombing campaigns, strategic assassinations, torture, and fear-based methods – are used by both the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) and the French military in Algiers. Assuming the French are unjustified occupiers, to what extent are the actions of the FLN justified? Is it really like they say, all’s fair in love and war? Are civilian casualties, targeting authorities for assassination, and violent acts to induce fear in the general public legitimate means to achieve independence against a ruler? The film seems unapologetic in its massacre of street officers; gunning them down in broad daylight. The actuality of the hardships that both sides had to withstand in pursuit of their goal is utterly gripping 45 years afterwards! Often Algerians on the street are referred to as a dirty Arabs but then their women plant bombs in public places, killing innocent French people. To my perception this is a very realistic portrayal; each side committed atrocities. They both treated each other brutally. Although La Battaglia di Algeri was subsidised by the Algerian government and banned in France for many years, the movie isn't necessarily made for the viewer to choose a side to support. This makes it a MASTERPIECE!! Methods similar to India’s civil disobedience didn't stand a chance against colonial France? It was Mohandas Gandhi who pointed out that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”.

It's a vivid and very specific recreation of the insurrection against the French in Algiers in the late Fifties that shows how the French systematically eradicated that insurrection. The French won the battle but lost the war. A process that might have proceeded peacefully in a matter of months, takes years to happen. The film documents the sad foolishness of solving conflicts with violence, the maximum loss and suffering on both sides and the protraction of the inevitable outcome.
