Wide Sargasso Sea: In this prequel to Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester finds himself in Jamaica looking to make his fortune. As the second son, the expectation is that his brother will inherit the family estate and so his future must lie elsewhere. He soon meets Antoinette Cosway and is offered a substantial dowry to marry her. Only after the wedding does he learn of her family history, including the madness that afflicted her mother. Their relationship in a constant downward spiral, he decides that they should return to England where he keeps her locked away in her room. |

I think Jean Rhys would have approved of this adaptation. True in letter and spirit to the book, with some of the best passages included. There's this sense of menace and foreboding just beneath the natural beauty of the Caribbean. Very cool.

this movie is so sad. in jane eyre she just looks like this phsyco but rlly she is just a woman who fell in love with the wrong man and now she is broken.......

I like the first one best the characters were more exotic.

I watched Jane Eyre first and then this movie. And I think its better understood that way. It was nice to get a different perspective on his wife other than what is presented in Jane Eyre(that was simply that she was crazy). This movie gave her a life, a story. But its unfortunate that he took it away. He never gave her a chance, he never trusted her, not even for a moment, and he never tried to understand her. And so because of his fear, he kept a free spirit locked away. Anyone and I do mean anyone, will eventually go crazy if they are locked away for long enough. 10/10 (I recommend that you watch Jane Eyre first).

To understand the movie better, I would suggest you read the book. This movie was okay though

Interesting movie but couldn't quite get into it. The 1993 version is better. Too much skin and not enough story, think I'll try the book!
