This movie brought to mind a line from Ripley's Game: "One thing is for certain, we are constantly being born". This film made me think of the limitless opportunities to find resonace with one's own soul because nothing is ever the same thing twice.

This is regarded as a classic here in Poland, partly I guess because the Stanislaw Lem novel is one of only 2 or 3 things written in Polish which are international classics. (Can you name 2 more? ;-). Apart from the ending of this film, which is haunting and enigmatic, I'm afraid I prefer the George Clooney version. For me, at 3hrs this was overlong.... but maybe I'm missing something.

The critically successful Solaris features Natalya Bondarchuk (Hari), Donatas Banionis (Kris Kelvin), Jüri Järvet (Dr Snaut), Vladislav Dvorzhetsky (Henri Burton), Nikolai Grinko (Kris Kelvin’s Father), Olga Barnet (Kris Kelvin’s Mother), Anatoli Solonitsyn (Dr Sartorius), and Sos Sargsyan (Dr Gibarian); the music score is by Eduard Artemyev. At the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, it won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury, the FIPRESCI prize and was nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Science Fiction at its most meditative and ruminative.
