The sequel to Night of the Living Dead starts where its predecessor left off, with zombies now outnumbering the living and the remnants of society in chaos. Two SWAT officers and a young couple set out in search of safety in a helicopter, eventually finding a shopping mall, that once cleared and barricaded, they decide will act as an ideal temporary safe haven. But it soon becomes apparent that help may not be coming any time soon.

George A Romero, the godfather of zombie movies, had a lot to live up to when returning to the material of his hugely successful debut. Perhaps unexpectedly, Romero decides to take a swipe at consumerism. Unsubtle though it may be, it has stood the test of time magnificently. The numerous shots of zombies stumbling around aimlessly in the shopping centrewill be familiar to anyone who has been to a supermarket on a Saturday morning. One of the underlying themes of greed rapidly leading to death is another effective message in a film that demands to be taken seriously as social commentary as well as a kick-ass zombie flick.

It's popular view that this middle instalment in "The Trilogy of the Dead" is a rare example of a sequel bettering the original. It certainly has more to say, perhaps more than any contemporary horror film, and it's certainly the best film ever made in a shopping mall.
