5/5. the best comedy from monthy pythons. if you do not like brithish sense of humor do not watch it. this film you or love it, or don't. some people just do not get it.

Cruci-FICTION. The setting is Judea 33 A.D. The Pythons realised what most sword and sandal epics had failed to: that people are all the same, no matter what period of history they live in. Gospel according to neighbour: with a twisted sense of humour, their focus isn't on Jesus Himself who is mostly left out of picture, but on a lesser known contemporary, Brian of Nazareth, who lives a normal life until one day, as a result of a series of absurd and truly hilarious circumstances, a bunch of desperate people just start following him for no reason. He is soon hailed as the long awaited Messiah, even though he denies his divinity. Achingly funny and seriously satirical of everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate, to crazy prophets and Roman centurions. A testing moment was Graham Chapman's Full Monty scene. The problem was that half of the 300 extras were Muslim women, whose law forbade them to see such aberrations. Chapman recalled: "So when I flung open the shutters, half the crowd ran away screaming!" (BBC) I would also like to mention Eric Idle's performance as Stan who wants to be called Loretta and the bearded women who attend stoning! Six hundred years ago, the Pythons might well have been burnt at the stake for making Life of Brian. Nevertheless, the movie should be viewed as an attack not on religion itself, but on its most absurd forms, like fanaticism, radicalism and fundamentalism.
