The first time i saw this i saw this episode Catherine Tate is fairly talented, extremely watchable and, really quite unique. The David Tennent series was a lot more slower paced and, well, clever. Not that Matt Smith doctor and Stephen Moffats team's Doctor who are lacking in charms, they're just quicker paced and brilliantly intelligent. Both versions are, of course, reputable and entirely fictional geniuses. I think that was my point.

So to summarise: Catherine Tate- quite good when no do crap sketch show. And Doctor who- be smart but no real.

the newer doctor who series is very adventurous and more action pact than the older series. i have seen all the doctor who episodes and every single one of them is fast paced and great the series never stops surprising with new twists and turns and the show never gets old.

What makes me love this show more than any other reason is its depth. Sure, on the surface, it seems like a quirky alien travelling around saving the world in a spacebox with a pretty young girl at his side. While this isn't wrong, it's so much more than that.

The Doctor is seen by humans as a savior, almost as a god. They're his favorite race, and he's always keeping a watchful eye on them. Viewers can identify with him, however, because he's not perfect. Remove that superhero shell, and he's fallible and vulnerable. He's lonely and confused, and he needs us just as as much as we need him. His companions save his life on a regular basis by showing him an alternative, human perspective on a situation.

Now from a critical standpoint. I love all three of the new Doctors. Christopher Eccleston portrayed a straighter, more serious, frankly badass Doctor. Matt Smith, on the other hand, is far more eccentric and goofy. David Tennant shows a perfect mixture of both, being able to crack a joke and make a galaxy-altering decision back-to-back. I think that quality is why his Tenth Doctor is considered the fan favorite.

Despite arguments among the fandom, I like all of the companions too. Rose, Martha, Donna, and Amy (not to mention Mickey, Jackie, Captain Jack, River, and Rory) are all unique characters. They help the Doctor in their own different ways, and each maintain a unique relationship with him: Rose is in love with him, Martha harbors a secret unrequited love for him, Donna just enjoys his company, and Amy wants to snog his face off. This variety keeps you wondering what's going to happen next every time he gets a new companion.

As for the writing, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. Steven Moffat, Russel T. Davies, and all of the others are absolute geniuses. Despite the series' 48-year run, the writers still manage to create new material and always keep you guessing without seeming cheesy or stupid. The characters are so well written that you've started forming a friendship with them without even realizing it, providing for some heart-wrenching moments throughout the series.

If you're looking for a new sci-fi series to watch that will make you laugh, cry, and ponder the meaning of existence (all in one episode), it's definitely this one.

I've never seen the original series, nor this one. A friend suggested I try it out and see if I like it. I watched the very first episode and thought it was pretty unique and interesting to watch! I love the time traveling, and also how that's what hooked Rose into going with Doctor Who (that part made me chuckle, nicely done). Christopher Eccleston did a GREATjob! He is a talented actor. I think this show probably gets better as it goes on, since this is just the first episode, and usually TV shows that have good pilot episodes tend to get even better. I will have to watch more to see if I will really like it enough for it to be a regular show for me. After I watch more episodes, I hope to be back here to write another review that is "raving" about the show! ;-}
I would also like to go watch some of the older series after reading your reviews below, it sounds interesting also. I like to compare older series to the newer remakes and see how they've changed, and which I like better.
