Masterchef Australia - 10 months ago
The best of all the Masterchef series !! For starters, take a look at the huge number of season episodes. The variety is enough to satisfy the biggest food show/reality tv addict on the planet and unable to wait until the next episode. Different from other countries in the series, the Australians are so nice and cheery and always making lemonade out of lemons and almost scary because no one can be that kind: can they? Absolutely. Then to top it all off, the number of Masterchef classes manage to expose the viewer to a greater number of food options, technique and recipes. Australia's location and resources allow for a unique and bountiful selection of foodstuffs. The ingredients choices are appealing and refreshing. Contestants range in style and personality making the challenges and eliminations its own drama in the show. Watching this program has this viewer wanting them all to be winners by the end! And they are- as typical of this shining star in the Masterchef series.
The Perfect Game - 11 months ago
A wonderful film that goes beyond a simply family, sports, or feel good movie. The script artfully pulls a time in history loosely documenting true events of the 1957 Little League World Series of baseball. The acting is soulful and the scenes all give that feel of being in the 50s or right at a ball game. Beyond it all is a subtle shade of life lessons where sometimes the good guys do win. This is a movie and sometimes to make a point there has to be a bit of artistic license allowed. It isn't a documentary, but gives a genuine feel for this event. There are many individual stories wrapped up in the main plot. A variety of history, characterizations, costuming, morality and some humor bring together a film that won't be easily forgotten.
Treme - 11 months ago
As HBO hits another television drama series home run. The biggest drawback is fear of cancellation. Treme is not shorthand for Extreme, it's the name of a New Orleans district dating back to the murkiest depths of the city's history. And the show portrays living in the aftermath of nature's fury and government failures. The music is divine and as diverse as the flavors of New Orleans, LA, USA. This series manages to capture microbits of a population left with too little too late. Writing, acting and directing are all top-notch. This series doesn't need the distraction of gratuitous sex and violence as one would expect from HBO. It has the feel of a reality show through the grit and seamless flow of events. Whether one is curious about the city, the people or the region; there is nothing to disappoint with life in the Treme.
The Devil Wears Prada - 1 year ago
A movie that has become a pop culture reference through it's ability to entertain across the board. One need not be a fashionista or Meryl Streep fan to be drawn into the dog-eat-dog world of success. Anne Hathaway is delightfully goofy and naive as she digs deep to survive in the concrete jungle of NYC. Streep is just plain scary as the boss from hell. 2 Oscars and many other awards does make this film worth watching and a star in its genre.
Edge of America - 1 year ago
Directed by one of Indian country's best (Chris Eyre), this film stars a young Eddie Spears. There are many reasons to watch this movie: 1- based on a true story. 2- keeps true to the 80s era depicted. 3- storyline carries many lessons beyond being a champion. 4- looking for a unique feel good movie B movie of A quality The truth is life on particular Native American reservation at the time making it's own story. Chris Eyre does a great job of not only showcasing natives in America, but keeps an 80s feel about the movie. The film is unique in the way it combines tribal nations, stereotyping and the viewer learns as much as the characters. The plot mixes humor, tension and drama into a pleasant way to relax for 1hr45min.

Despite accusations in the comments for ripping off the Hobbit and LoTR, this film came out first. It did receive awards for innovative animation technique for that time. Keep in mind the period when the movie released and one understands the Cold War references after the US bailed on Viet Nam. (Don't compare a rotary dial to a Smart Phone!) It's a generational comment on the world in it's time. This film brought new technique with its use of background and styles of combined animation. The storyline represents the feelings in the era of fear, tech starting to leap forward and the confusion of the day between ideas of peace and love VS power and greed. All of that said and done, this movie has some very funny and touching moments. The beginning starts off different from the rest of the film as it sets the background to this tale of two wizards and the battle between good and evil. In this movie, Technology is evil while Magic is good. Worth watching to the very end for the moral of the story. Not really a film for children, however it is kid friendly for pre-teens on up who might understand what is going on.

Unless one likes to nit-pick about a few details, the era of Camelot springs to life in this series. From the beginning, the characters are believable and lovable. The costuming and sets are quite decent, but it's the story lines that weave the magic bringing in characters that make the viewer escape to another era and believe this is how it might have been. Plus the humor and action abound enough to satisfy someone who may not be a fan of the time period. This show is creative, smart and intriguing. A must see if wanting something a bit out the norm.
500 Nations - 1 year, 10 months ago
Documentary done by the same folks who did 'Dances With Wolves', (writer and narrator etc.) who play the guilt cards making Indigenous Americans seem romantic or tragic. While any half decent college quarter semester could teach many of the same things, at least one point for trying. Once again a major production by non-native people trying to explain a culture that belongs to someone else. While attempting to be fair and sticking to facts of history and providing paychecks for some actors, it's adequate but certainly not a view of history from a true cultural perspective.
