you asked for zombie recommendations and a question for you would be - what have you seen? or, what have you liked or disliked?
but, since i have no patience...
my favorites are the obvious 28 days/weeks later duo, new dawn of the dead and the resident evil series is on this list for me as well. but there's also a couple of foreign films i like in this genre. la horde a french flick and another [oREC], it's the spanish version of quarantine and better IMO. i always suggest watching the subtitled versions. subs not dubs as i say.. better as well.
also, the crazies, and the signal might be up your alley.
the undead, the quick and the undead, the return of the living dead (watch 1, but 'prolly stay away from 2 and 3. lost cleverness and went with outrageous), and shaun of the dead are varying degrees on the funny side, but well done.
most importantly there an actual well done series that just came out called the walking dead. this is a must see from AMC.
there is one that is one of my favorites that , in my mind, is a story in the 28 weeks later universe, called dead set, or dead set serious for a shorter, edited version. i say watch the whole thing, but if your attention span is....
out of the zombie genre, but in my mind, the ultimate reality zombie movies are the road and the book of eli, cuz in the end the worst zombie i can think of is best know as a cannibal. this scares me cuz i think that that will be the closest i'll ever get to a zombie apocalypse: U.S. food shortages=cannibals.
one other outside the zombie per se genre, but i think should be included is the space western series by joss wheden called firefly with the epic movie finale serenity. they have reavers, which for a television series got pretty intellectually disturbing. especially in the movie finale. this will not make you scared of the dark, or nothing, but worth a watch.
and if you haven't, no true zombie fan would ever let a romero film about zombies pass them by, no matter how bad their getting. day of the dead, diary of the dead, dawn of the dead. take some benign word and put it in front of the words "of the dead" and there you go... night of the living dead, old and new, are very good.
P.S.as a by note. these shows rocked as well in other creepy genres. i thought thirty days of night was creepy as hell, as well as the mist. watch the norwegian version of the american remake let me in which is called let the right one in. both vampire movies with a twist. the cave and the ruins got me a bit twitchy. and one russian duo called nightwatch and daywatch aren't in creepy genre, but if you missed you gotta kiss it.
well, that should keep you going for awhile. i'm sure i missed something like gangs of the dead, but who knows? maybe i'll remember later. i believe all these movies are available here on this site.
