I agree nerds need to be out and proud and comfortable with that label. Intelligence can often be frightening to others but the world needs them.
Your comment is in the right mindset, but no matter what anyone says, to me, nerd is not derogatory. In fact, it's usually complementary. Most of my friends are nerds in some way, and that's the best possible thing. So even if someone meant it in a hurtful way, I wouldn't think like that. Because I am a nerd (self professed) and that's awesome. But thanks.
